Fayne Files For Arbitration

Just saw this posted on TG's blog. Devils tendered Fayne to 110% of last year's salary. If it gets to arbitration, will be between July 20th and August 4th in Toronto.

This should be a good one. I'll be happy with anything under $3.

Trade him imo. Get some assets back and go from there.

It won't reach arbitration.

Considering he's younger than Tallinder and Greene and will likely command about the same price; i wouldn't mind exploring trade options involving Fayne. There's a shortage of talented defenders available right now, if he could return as a solid pick or a forward i wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger.

After the playoffs we sort of showcased him and Greene a little bit, and with our defensive logjam it might be prudent to sell high on Fayne; especially since at his age and as an RFA he probably has more value than Tallinder and Greene whilst playing at about the same level.

I'd happily go into next season with:

Volchenkov - Zidlicky
Tallinder - Larsson
Greene - Salvador/Harrold
Harrold/Salvador

That's a solid group, and if we could ship out Fayne and maybe a fringe prospect like Urbom who still has a little value and get something decent in return, we absolutely should.

He deserves an upgrade. Can't fault the Devils for trying to tender the minimum. I doubt he goes anywhere, and he'll be in the 2-3M neighborhood.

The Devils tendering him gave them more time to work on the other more important UFA's as well

I thought for sure they would settle in the low 2s here. Stop trying to rip the kid off. He's been fantastic.

He saw the Mark Fayne Appreciation thread on and decided he'd try for a raise.

Mark Fayne is a horse. Logs big minutes. He deserves a good pay day.

Nobody's trying to rip the kid off. It's part of the process. I'd expect a 2-year deal between 1.5 - 2 million. A little more if he signs for another couple of years into his UFA years.

Well if he hadn't filed for arbitration and they were unable to work out a deal he would have been forced to accept his ridiculously low QO. This is just an insurance move. Hopefully Lou can lock him up long term.

Plus, by Fayne electing arbitration, it opens up a second buyout period so we can get rid of Barch.

I don't like this right here. Hope I'm not reading into this too much.

''Now, if the two sides do not forge a contract before Fayne’s scheduled arbitration hearing, which will be in Toronto between July 20 and Aug. 4, the Devils can either accept the salary ruling or, if they don’t, reject it and make Fayne a free agent.

The Devils currently have a glut of eight defensemen listed on their NHL roster and GM Lou Lamoriello said yesterday during his conference call following Zach Parise signing with the Wild that he expected Adam Larsson to be a regular in his second NHL season.''

It can't be possible that we let him walk can it? I want him back, but if we're gonna lose him I'd rather it be a trade then letting him go free agency. This isn't a possible plan to weed out a defenseman is it?

Great guy, hope it's short term though, I'm not too sure his ceiling is that high in terms of development.

If we're getting rid of a D man(We have to it makes no sense not to) Tallinder is the first I'd like to see go. Not Fayne no way. Some people were saying we'll probably keep all 8 until Fayne returns from injury. I don't think there's any need for that. Lou said he would be ready for the start of the season, but things happen, and setbacks can happen as we saw with Zajac.

If Fayne can't make opening night we have Harrold. He was very solid for a 7th D man when he played every night. He showed he could play long stretches of time like he did in the playoffs. Pete was so satisfied with him he didn't sit until they put Larsson in to shake things up, and then later to put Tallinder in after we lost 3 games in a row in the Finals. I'm convinced Harrold can handle that role until Fayne returns. IF Fayne even needs to sit out at all. If not or if someone else on the blue line is hurting at the same time then that would be the time to bring up Urbom, or Gelinas until things are healed up.
