There's a difference between the player himself and the business side of it.

Two separate things that sometimes get mixed into one, wich shouldn't happen when talking about the impact it had towards our organisation and the mindset we tried to establish for close to 2 decades.

Kovalchuk didnt really screw us from a business POV.

His salary jumps to 11M but other salaries dip by such an amount that despite the increase in his salary, we still are barely spending more than 54M in actual dollars.

In spite ---in large part due to miraculously found fourth line along with a great season from Clarkson and the addition of Ponikarovsky that added depth to the bottom 6 that:
A. I didn't think we be able to afford with our top heavy contracts

And

B. A depth in the bottom 6 that we haven't had in 10 years that I give full credit to DeBoer for insisting on so he could roll 4 lines and play a style he wanted.

That's like the exact same as the cap hit.

God damn Kovy, we could have been under it.

Kovy's bad and he should feel bad.

Elias goes down 1 million.

Brodeur goes down. 5

Clarkson goes up 1 million

Zajac goes up 1 million.

54 in real dollars without. Parise, Ponikarovsky, Sykora, Fayne.

Your fudging the numbers.

I didn't mean "money wise" but the approach and the mindset that no player is bigger then the team. Lou has built this team in that precise fashion for years and when players ask for too much, Lou usually let's them walk, correct?

The IK signing wasn't Lou's idea and I'm certain everyone already knows that. He got told to make it happen... and he did. By doing so, it kind of shook the core of how we did business since day #1 and a new way of thinking was born from that contract IMO.

Doesn't mean I'm right but that's how I see it.

A wise word to folks shaken up by this.

The year was, 1991 and Captain Kirk Muller was traded by a competitive hockey club after leading this team to the brink of the SCF and competing against super Mario at a discount to Montreal causing commotion and despair.

Meanwhile, a team by the name of the St. Louis Blues was penalized and forced to give a player by the name of Scott Stevens.

Stevens did not report out of concerns of unity and the fact that a man by the name of ken daneyko wanted more money as well. General Manager Lou Lamoriello had a financial bind and issues with players.

Stevens would lead the team to where we know today and questions of unity were slowly and surely put to bed.

Before that, Captain Kirk had walked out of camp and caused further concerns raising questions of trading that young and highly paid defense man, but ultimately that trade did not happen.

The fact is that this club once overcame a leadership crisis and will again overcome it.

Most in here did not live through the drama and those that were alive do not likely remember it, but we did have these issues before and the man by the name of Lou Lamoriello saw us through it and the road to glory.

So in other words, none of this Kovy junk matters as long as we have depth in the bottom 6 and roll 4 lines?

Sounds about right to me.

Just found out someone I work with is friends with someone in the Devils ownership group (on the side trying to get out). I'll be sure to pump him for inside info as to that whole end of it...

Anyways, apparently there's belief that the Parise/Suter contracts will be voided because of something to do with the guaranteed money vs. potential for lockout. I don't know what in the CBA provides for that, but that's what I heard. Nonetheless, there's no expectation or hope Parise comes back even if that happens. I asked about potential tampering charges and there wasn't any knowledge about that.

Im not fudging the numbers.

You cant claim that Kovalchuk is holding us back when the numbers show that with his ridiculous salary we are spending at the floor.

With a Parise we'd be spending $66M (real $) right now based off the contract he signed

That is the point. That contract under our financial conditions is probably going to cost us a quality forward this year or at least half of this year...hello Tedenby!

There's too much made of this previous "way of doing business". The IK signing didn't shake the core of how we do business - the current state of the League under the current CBA did. What team in the NHL is icing a competitive roster using our old business model??
