Only way I see him retiring is if he is not medically cleared to play(which at this point it a possibility). I am not sure how insurance works in his case if he is forced to retire but he might be able to retire due to injury and get a nice payday
Nobody is going to take DP's contract in the near future. In a few years, maybe a team will want to unload a long deal for a declining player, say a deal with 3 or 4 years x $7M, whereas DP will have 5 or 6 years x $4.5M.
As for the contract, it is bad, but it was also bad luck. Before his injuries, he had 4 straight years playing 50+ games with a s% > .900. Not outstanding, but solid. He was an all-star and played in the Olympics. Then the injuries destroyed his career.
The same thing could happen to Quick or Rinne. The same thing could have happened to Zetterberg or any of the other players who signed long-term deals.
I never liked the deal because I never thought DP was a great goalie. The team was banking on his continued improvement. I wouldn't have. But it is the injuries that made the deal go from fair to horrible.
Honestly, I don't feel it's a priority to trade Komisarek, as most leafs fans do.
We are not super close to the cap, and we just got some cap relief by buying out Armstrong anyway. After trading Schenn there is no longer a surpluss of experienced D on the team, especially of the shut-down/defensive-specialist kind.
And I am actually interested in seeing what new coach Carlyle can do for Komi. Remember, this is the same coach that got Beauchemin back into form after leaving Toronto. I have high hopes that Carlyle can get Komi back into a player we could use.

In addition, the ownership would not want to pay $45 million to a player that has a history of injuries. It doesn't matter if MLS&E has deep pockets, no ownership in their right mind would pay that much to one player who will not be playing for the majority of those years. Both Bell and Rogers did not become media juggernauts by throwing away money like that, and you can bet that ownership would block a deal of this nature regardless of the assets coming back.

Wow, all the bile directed at an injured player is really uncalled for.
Look at all the 10-13 year contracts in the league now. There but for the grace of God goes other teams and players.
Obviously the propoesd deal makes no sense for Toronto. But what's happened to DP is sad. I feel terrible for the guy when I see him trying to get back up, obviously in tremendous pain.
