$3.5 would be a massive, massive steal for the Sharks. Vlasic, by the numbers, was one of the best defensive d-men in the NHL last year. If he puts up 30+ points again with Burns (which I see as highly likely) we'd have one awesome #2 locked up for a pittance.
My bet is thats not true.
so vlasic lost 200 k to stay here long term? highly doubt it, but would love it since i don't believe he is worth anything above 4 million
I think everyone is too low on their estimates. With the increased cap and what some of the other UFA defenseman were going for, I'm guessing $26M/5 years.
4.2M, which is about right. Wouldn't call it a steal, but its not really overpayment either.
That would be an extremely fair deal. Perfect in my eyes.

Giving him 5.2/year would be overpaying him by quite a bit. He's a solid guy, but giving him a raise from 3.1 million to 5.2 million would be crazy

can't count him as a UFA yet, if it was after july 1st next year yes, but he didn't get to the open market to be over priced like that.
and plus if vlasic is going to be making 5+ million a year, he better be putting up 50+ points for the remainder of that contract.
I'm happy with it, don't get me wrong, but he is still pretty much a stay at home shutdown D, but he does it extremely well. If he can develop more of an offensive game, it will be a giant steal in the future.
I want to see Vlasic with a solid Defensive partner like Brad Stuart, and see Suter with an offensive defenseman who is highly irresponsible defensively like Tom Gilbert, then we can say how good the Vlasic contract looks; or we could put him as the #2 PPD with Burns, assuming we trade Boyle, though I don't want that; just saying that Vlasic hasn't had the opportunities offensively that Suter has. I do think Suter is much better than Vlasic though, but so is $4.2 million over 5 years, compared to $7.54 million over 13 years.
For now though, great contract regardless. Keep in mind that if the cap increases in the next 6 years the way it did in the past 6 years ($26 Million, meaning the cap would be $96 million), then Vlasic will be under 2 percent of the salary cap at the end of his contract; despite being a solid 2/3 Defensive Defenceman, who would be only 31 at the end of the contract.
tldr amazing deal by Wilson. Wilson is a really good GM, his only gaffes are on bottom pair/line guys who he overpays, and his inability to consider a previous move he made may have been a mistake.

suter played with a highly offensive defensemen, yes he was also responsible defensively. but don't kid yourself, weber was the boyle on the nashville team. while suter was the vlasic.
suter was the shutdown defensmen on that pairing, while weber was the one to take all the chances offensively.
