[WSH/PIT] Mike Green wielding his RFA leverage

Assuming PIT and Mike Green have already spoken and have reached a mutually satisfactory deal in principle...

To PIT
D Mike Green, RHS, RFA

To WSH
D Simon Despres, LHS, ELC (former first rounder, towering top prospect)
W Pascal Dupuis, $1.5m, ufa'13 (20G grinder)
1st rndr
2nd rndr

PIT then signs W Alex Semin to fill Dupuis' spot. Green pairs with Martin, and Despres with Orlov eventually. Thoughts?

I'd do it. my fellow Pens fans will say that Mike Green is not the type of dmen the Pens need.

edit: I definitely don't want Semin though.

Yeah, this trade is horrible for the Pens, great for the Caps.

Hell to the no from the Pens, hell no.

Someone post that no gif that is popular around here, like 100x.

Mike Green is very good when healthy but he fills no need for the Pens since we have Letang on the roster and Morrow, Despres and Pouliot in the system.

Doesn't make sense financially and Green doesn't really fit our needs (already have a right-handed D that puts up big numbers). Considering Green isn't something we need, there's too much going the other way. Dupuis alone would be a bad deal. Not because he's worth more than Green (he's not), but he fits a role we need better than Green does.

Just wondering what would the price of Mike Green be in a trade?

The need Green fills is the one Z Michalek couldn't, a top four d-man who can move the puck and keep up with Crosby or Malkin when Letang is not on the ice. Not much out there in free agency, and almost impossible to get such a d-man in trades withour sending a top four dman back.

The premise of this is that Green got a contract offer from the Pens that he found compelling. The PIT offer to WSH in such a scenario is therefore mostly non roster assets.

Mike Green wouldn't talk to the Penguins.

Maybe his old buddy Derek Engelland talks him into it.

Washington loses the best player in the deal, in a time when they are trying to compete. Green is a key piece.

Pittsburgh acquires a player that does not fill a need for them.

Makes no sense on either side.

WSH has little choice in the matter since Green is a free agent. As for PIT's need, Green near perfectly fits coach Bylsma's system, as well as the gaping hole in PIT's top four blueline rotation.

Extremely hard for the Caps to get fair value for Green after the injury plagued seasons he's had..

I would actually argue that Dupuis is the best player in this trade... A 20g versatile grinder that fits well into the Pens lineup with a minimal cap hit.

This trade makes little sense for anyone and your premise that Green has agreed to a deal with the Pens and is "wielding his RFA leverage" does not make for much of a conversation. You wanting to have a discussion about the Caps dealing Green to the team they probably hate the most for "non roster assets" based on an imaginary situation makes this conversation little more than a fairytale really.

Caps fans will shoot this down and rightfully so (both fanbases would for the most part), but your fairytale situation cancels that out, which, as I say, does not make for much of a conversation.

Caps fans "no".

You "well in my fairytale world where everything is shaped so it MUST happen this way they have little choice"

Caps fans

The Pens and Caps will not be trading major parts with one another. The Vokoun trade is about as signifiant as you'll see, and that was really just a trade-rights deal.

If you want to trade Green there are probably 20 other teams willing to give more. The Pens do not need him so wouldn't be willing to give much up.

This has nothing to do with value at all, but I wouldn't trade Dupuis in anything but a stunning "can't say no to" coup right now, just because he is currently that important at what he brings for what he earns.

OK this makes little sense. Green is an RFA who recently turned down arbitration and in all likelyhood is working on a nice extension with McPhee.

IF Green wanted to be a UFA after this year why not take the arbitration and 1 year deal and then become a UFA after this year so he can CHOOSE his destination?

Pen's fans have really started to over value their players.

nope. GMGM knows green puts up 55 in PIT and isnt about to help a rival.

caps as per the last few years want to win this year. if they make any trade involving a star/veteran and a prospect, it'll be them getting the player (see: Dallas)

I love this deal but then again I'm a large Penguins supporter.

From a Caps standpoint, this offer would make Peter Bondra roll over in his grave...if he were dead.

Why wouldn't Washington match or except the multiple 1st rounders?
