Immaturity? Its a business. The same argument was made with the lockout. The players should accept what the owners are offering because they are all immature and spoiled players. They don't care about the game since they won't accept less or offer to take less. Anaheim gave Cam Fowler $20M over 5 years. What has he proven? The Rangers need DZ in the line-up from day 1. 3 years(including this season)takes to him to 1 year before group III(IF he plays 40 accrued games in the next 3 seasons/that number will be less this season with the 48 game season)or 2 years before group III at 27. In 3 years,DZ will be arbitration eligible.
Do you think Sather will offer him 5 years? I don't see it happening. 4 years is even less likely because it would coincide with his eligibility for unrestricted free agency. So that leaves 1, 2 or 3 year deals. 1 is also unlikely because Sather won't want to have to deal with him next year with all the other contracts that will be up.
On a 3 year deal, maybe he could get 3 mil per. Carlson took a 6 year deal and got just under 4 mil per year.
Just left the insanity of the Main Boards. Boy are there some hmmmm needy souls dwelling there, mostly from a land with a leaf on the flag... Gotta say though - their persistence, rage and stubbornness is worth some praise.
If Subban actually signs a 4 yr $5.5per deal than this could get interesting.
What happened to the 2nd contract...

Yes. Yes it is. If I'm a GM with Sather's track record, there is no way a 22 year old makes me feel like he's got me over a barrel. Short of maybe Gretzky or Orr.
He's a kid. This is how it works. If he wants to sit out, let's see how that works out for him. I suspect not well. If he's mature he'll get that, sign, keep his powder dry and go do his job. He'll be making a lot more money than most guys his age anyway. And the perks ain't bad either.
To your other points. I'm not sure they are relevant. The CBA was a much more far reaching labor and profit sharing dispute between partners in a huge enterprise.
Dizzy is a young guy negotiating his second contract. Different deal, imo.

Aside from all your other points, I believe I can answer this one. Cam Fowler has proven that he is the future of the Anaheim defense. His pay is outsized compared to his production because of his importance to the organization. Whether or not it's borne out by his actual play is really beside the point. Edit: One more note on Fowler. His deal takes him 1 year into UFA, even though the numbers are all even. Using Staal's deal as a reference, a player is about 50% more valuable as a UFA than as an RFA. (Staal makes $3.6m/year in his RFA years and $5.4m in his UFA year.) If Anaheim had backloaded Fowler's deal in the same manner, it would have looked similar. ~3.6m/year average for the first 4 years and ~$5.4m for his UFA year. They paid him extra in each year of that contract for the one year of UFA service.
Del Zotto, on the other hand, is behind 2 players when you talk about the "future of the D" (Staal and McDonagh).
Don't see him getting 4+ years. Staal got 5 years for his second contract but he trended upward every year. MDZ has been as inconsistent as anything. Nothing over $4 mil per. Hopefully the deal happens quickly so he doesn't miss any camp.
He's apparently a step above everyone else offensively and treated like Pietrangelo. McDonagh tied him for points despite having way less PPTOI/G
OEL plays in a small market, therefore, since no one sees him play, he's actually a legend in the making. No one knows it yet.
Just like the Erik Johnson vs. McDonagh debate. McD is the better player by a mile, but EJ plays in the underrated west coast. Therefore, he is better by default.
Ding ding ding, we have a winner.
1 year makes no sense because Sather would have to worry about him, McD, Stepan and Hags.
3 years coincides the expiration of the contracts of: Kreider, Callahan, Girardi, Hank, Gabby, to name a few.
Staal expires in year 4, and I don't think that DZ has earned himself a contract longer that 3 years, which once again, would make no sense.
2 years is the best term for DZ. McD next summer, however? Lock him up for good.

Absolutely. I want him on the maximum allowed by the new CBA.
Sather has consistently been linked to Dan Boyle every trade deadline. His contract expires in 2014. Veteran no bull **** off the ice, right handed offensive defenseman.
Del Zotto + half of Redden's remaining cap hit to San Jose for Dan Boyle.
When Boyle's contract expires, re sign him to a far lesser contract.
Del Zotto is not worth 3+ million. He's very young. But 3+ million for erratic play? Turn overs? Brain farts? Has he learned to stop clubbing and chasing girls at night and focus on being a ****ing professional like Tortorella has been begging him to do? Don't have to worry about that or diminishing skill from Boyle in the next 2-3 years. While we are in our window to contend.
That or he gets his 3 million and **** blocks the REAL important core players from getting the money they should get. McDonagh and Stepan especially.
McIlrath will be knocking on the door soon. Skjei in 2, 3 max.
Del Zotto is expendable. McDonagh, Staal, Girardi are NOT.
