Figured this would be forthcoming with Chicago re-signing Emery, then signing Carruth and Simpson, Richards already under contract and presuming a QO for Hutton, there wasn't any room for Salak whom I would guess is headed back to Europe.

If I'm the Habs I'd jump all over this. Get rid of Robert Mayer and upgrade him with Salak would be great.

Same. The Habs goalie depth is laughable, but I haven't followed Salak's development, so

Looked good in training camp/pre-season, but very poor (and injured) in the AHL after the Hawks curiously went with Emery over him for the regular season. Has the attributes of what could be a good NHL keeper, but I suspect he's probably headed back to europe for good now considering this was his second stint in North America.

Being waiver at this point of the off-season is usually done prior to releasing someone, so no one is going to claim him.

What the....

I'm confused by this. Hawks fans were really touting this kid as a solid prospect.

Decent talent, but complete headcase. Hawks have 2 20-year-olds coming up, so they had to make room.

Bad decision, IMO.

Other goalies with comparable stats in the AHL this season: Braden Holtby.

Well he had every right to be pissed

Hawks told him it would be open competition at camp and he came and outplayed Emery in every way only to be told "We are going with the experienced guy"

He could have stayed in SEL and been a #1 ,, He came over to NA under the belief that he would actually be given a real chance to make NHL roster

Then he went to minors got hurt and it was lost season

Still was an absolute Joke that Emery was on Hawks (And got re-signed on top of it)

I'd still claim him even with Price/Budaj.

This could mean that Emery could be headed to the A as a security option.

I may be reaching here.

Of course not. But both expected to be in the NHL this past season and were not happy when they ended up in the AHL. It almost certainly affected Holtby's performance. It would make sense if it affected Salak's too.

Salak is incredibly unorthodox though. Like a poor man's Niemi. Holtby has the potential to be a lot better than that.

Salak had a chance to take the backup job and didn't. He outplayed Emery, certainly, but let's not kid anyone here.... no one liked having those two as our options for the backup job. Hawks knew Emery could do a passable job, and made the correct decision to let Salak develop in Rockford. At the end of the day, Emery was bad because of his condition... going side to side is clearly difficult on his hip, he does it pretty slowly. Salak though, he was letting in some absolute nothing shots. It was like the big show was just too fast for him or something... or he was too tall and everyone else on the ice looked like tiny ants

It sucks, I wish things would have turned out better for him, but things only Got worse in Rockford, and he given the youth coming up behind him (not that they're great, just much younger) he didn't give us a reason to keep him around.

Carter Hutton outplayed him and was the IceHogs MVP. He will most likely be back next year as their starter and first call up again.
Hawks signed 2010 picks Kent Simpson and Mac Carruth to their ELCs. Hawks also have Alec Richards under contract. Hawks needed to make room for the Draft picks. Salak will go back to europe IMO

With the Columbus goaltending depth as bad as it is I wonder if they don't try to pick him up. With only Mason and York signed and Mason on the chopping block Columbus is in need of serious depth. I know nothing about him but if he has the ability I think the CBJ might look to pick him up.

is he on the $100 waiver thing where his contract will be terminated if he isn't picked up?

Nashville could use a backup since Lindback is now gone, but maybe a bit too risky..

Will Halak stick around if he's claimed or is he heading back to Europe regardless?

Salak is just more of what the Leafs already have - promising but unproven and likely unable to be a consistent #1.

Why is he waived? I mean I understand that the Blackhawks don't want him and he doesn't want to play for them but what is the purpose?

Option A - Accomodate Salak and see if other teams in the NHL are interested in his services (Normal waivers)

Option B - Buyout his contract

Option C - Terminate his contract
