Opening Night Predictions

Obviously subject to change as the Blues could still pick up a free agent or make a trade, but based on Armstrong's latest comments it sounds like he's not afraid to roll with what we have.

My prediction:

McDonald-Backes-Oshie
Perron-Berglund-Tarasenko
D'Agostini-Steen-Stewart
Sobotka-Nichol-Reaves

Pietrangelo-Polak
Jackman-Shattenkirk
Russell-Cole

Halak

That's what I'd bet on at this point. But, I'd rather see Schwartz in D'Agostini's spot, and D'ags alternate with Reaves and spell Nichol with Sobotka moving to centre when Nichol needs a rest. I'd also like to see another defenceman picked up to play with Pietrangelo, IF possible. But it isn't absolutely necessary.

If healthy, that's a 110 point team

Looks good but I would be interested to see Schwartz in Dags spot.

That third line (D'Agositini/Steen/Stewart) is a disaster, IMO.

D'Agostini is a one-trick pony when it comes to creating offense, and that trick is getting off his own shot on the rush. Stewart is basically the same thing, but with the added ability to bang in rebounds around the net. Neither is very good at using a partner on the rush. Neither cycles well or battles along the boards particularly well in the offensive zone, and they certainly can't create offense for their teammates off the cycle. Steen can cycle and create a shot for himself off the cycle, but he isn't particularly adept at setting up his teammates off the cycle, either. He's also not going to be spending a lot of time along the walls deep in the offensive zone as a center.

That line isn't going to generate any offense or sustained pressure/puck possession at all, and it isn't going to be making up for that on the defensive side of the puck either as it will be weak on the forecheck and at defending against the breakout with Stewart and D'Agostini on the wings.

IMO, Stewart needs to be playing with one of McDonald, Perron, or Schwartz (with the first two options being much better than the third due to their better ability to create their own shots off the cycle) if there's to be any hope of his offense numbers rebounding significantly from this past year.

All indications from Hitch say that as of now we're starting camp like:

D'Agostini-Backes-Oshie
Perron-Berglund-Stewart
McDonald-Steen-Tarasenko
Sobotka-Nichol-Reaves

Cole-Pietrangelo
Jackman-Shattenkirk
Russell-Polak

Halak
Elliot

Where did you come across that information?

Those lines are very close to what I would like to see. I have doubts that D'Agostini will hang onto that spot, as I personally think his play will eventually be exposed going up against the best lines in the league night in and night out.

I just hope D'Agostini isn't used for anything more than a sparkplug or spare.

It was from a morning skate a week or so ago. He said he wanted his pairings of Oshie-Backes and Perron-Berglund to stay and that he thinks Steen and McDonald will complement Tarasenko's skills well. I'll see if I can find it.

I really like these forward-lines, just don`t know if Perron is enough to get the best out of Bergy AND Stewart...maybe switch him with AMac (Berglund was pretty good centering him)
if the lines stay as they are just swich AMac with Dags and let Steen be the 2nd lefty on the blue-line with Russell on the PP

but I don`t buy the 110 point team thing yet, too many questionmarks:
Stew?, Dags?, how good and fast can Vlad translate into the very new team/game?, how good is Steen at C after years on the wing?, Cole?, is Wojwitka really good enough for #7 ice-time?

and as much as I like your forward-lines I like h22prelude93s` d-corps better

btw my prediction for the opening night is a W

Other than that, it's perfect. Love that 4th line.

I read that article as well, but remember these are predictions for opening night(Not training camp/pre-season). Chances are Hitch goes through several different combinations and changes by that time. And like Easton, I doubt D'Agostini sticks on that top line. I also feel that 2nd line of Perron-Berglund-Stewart is something we've seen and although looks good on paper...it just hasn't clicked much. I really think Steen will do a fine job as 3rd line center though as he has proved to be a very versatile player thus far. Hopefully he can add that playmaking element down the middle that we've really lacked in the past. If so, that really could help boost Stewart's game as well. Looking at his past he did average close to 30 assists per season with Leafs...so it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility that that is a side of him we haven't yet seen.

IMO, would be ideal if D'Ags was be moved for LHD. That would open up a spot for Schwartz on that 3rd line. I think he's ready, but I don't see any players currently in our top 9 that Hitch would be willing swap him with. If someone isn't moved then at the very least I'm sure he'll get the first call.

I would rather see Schwartz stay down another year and called up on need for exposure to the big game. He needs some strengthening in my opinion.

Based on what we saw last year I would agree with you but no one knows what kind of shape he will show up to camp in. I would like to think Hitch would play players based on merit instead of senority and if Schwartz could easily play his way onto the opening night lineup.

Since we have apparently expressed interest in Shane Doan, where do you see him fitting in a lineup here?

With Backes and Oshie causing hell for everyone around the league. That line could have a combined 600 hits.

If we do sign Doan, Schwartz would start in Peoria and Dags would be traded or play 4th line. Like the idea of Doan with Backes and Oshie too, would be the most hated line in NHL.

Doan-Backes-Oshie
Perron-Berglund-Stewart
McDonald-Steen-Tarasenko
Sobotka-Nichol-Reaves/D'Agostini/Crombeen

I'm going with a little different one then everyone else
Perron-Berglund-Tarasenko
Dags/Schwartz-Backes-Oshie
McDonald-Steen-Stewart
Sobotka-Nichol-Langenbrunner

Petro-Shatty
Jax-Polak
Russel-Cole

Halak

I think it all depends on which line is playing the best for the night to be the number one line, one night Steen's line could be the first and the next it could be the third..

That's part of the beauty of this team is the three lines are somewhat interchangeable as far as ice time goes, though I would imagine the Bashie line will still be the "top" line as those two play the hardest minutes.

I am curious as to who plays on the left with the duo of Bashie. Could end up being Schwartz.

Too early for an opening night prediction. I want to see what roster goes into camp first.
