2013-2014 Lines

I post this for three reasons:

1) I am generally obsessed with line combinations.
2) This board has been far too slow lately.
3) I hope to piss off people that get bothered my looking too far in the future.

A few rules:
1) No assumed acquisitions, lets pretend Darcy stops signing players.
2) Use only players that will still be under contract or will be RFA status by '13.
3) All prospects are fair game.

My shot:

Vanek-Grigs-Leino
Ott-Hodgson-Pominville
Foligno-Ennis-Stafford
Gerbe-Girgensons-Kaleta

Sekera-Myers
Erhoff-Pysk
McNabb-JGL

Way I see it: A couple solid acquisitions between now and then, and that could be a good year.

Ott-Hodgson-Vanek
Leino-Girgorenko-Pominville
Foligno-Ennis-Stafford
Gerbe-Girgensons-Kaleta

Sekera-Myers
McNabb-Ehrhoff
Weber-Pysyk

Miller
Enroth

I'm guessing Armia starts the year in the AHL. Sabres keep a close eye on him, how he adjusts to the NA game, and he works his way toward the top of the call-up list. Probably forces his way onto the Sabres full time by 14-15.

Playing by the rules of "No signings or trades for a full year".

Vanek - Hodgson - Armia
Foligno - Ennis - Stafford
Leino - Grigorenko - Pominville
Gerbe - Girgensons - Kaleta

Myers - McNabb
Sekera - Leopold
Ehrhoff - Sulzer

As far as the forwards go each line keeps a successful group together (Vanek/Hodgson, Leino/Pominville, FES, Gerbe/Kaleta)

Girgensons centers a 4th energy line with the same role as a traditional 3rd line, Vanek and Hodgson pull the tough assignments, then pick whichever of the other two gets the sheltered minutes. Grigorenko gets a top linemate in Pominville and is paired with two defensively responsible wingers.

I like these lines but where is Ott? I say he replaces Leino on the 3rd line or Kaleta on the 4th. Also, do you honestly believe McNabb will go right into the line-up as a top 2 D man? I think he needs to be wiggled in slowly during 13-14.

Ha. Knew I missed someone. Probably replace Kaleta, Gerbe, or Leino depending on how 12-13 shakes out then. Maybe even replace Armia if he doesn't make it straight to the NHL from SML.

As for McNabb I think he could pull a Myers and make it hard for them to send him down in 12-13 and he could make a rise to a top pair in 2 years. I think Regehr goes the way of Rivet. Unless you want McNabb as a 7th D which I don't think helps him at all. In 12-13 maybe, but not two years from now.

Stafford-Ennis-Pominville
Ott-Grigorenko-Armia
Gerbe-Girgensons-Tropp/Kaleta

Myers-Sekera
Ehrhoff-McNabb
Pysyk-Regher

Miller
Enroth

F-E-S stutters but with the chemistry stafford and ennis have shown many times ruff tries them with pominville and they become a dominant line. Hodgson sets up vanek and foligno creates time and space well chipping in offensively. Grigorenko and Armia find chemistry with there similar styles and score some highlight of the nigh goals while ott creates space for them and scores too. We bring back regher as a veteran leader for our new D mcnabb and pysyk

In all honesty, in 13/14 I think 5 defensive positions are more or less already filled:
Myers, Sekera, Ehrhoff, McNabb and Pysyk.
(assuming we don't offload one of them)

I have no idea what to do with spot #6. I'm not sure Regehr will be worth re-signing......Leopold re-ups? Maybe.

I honestly doubt JGL will be ready for full time NHL duty in 13/14 so I think there's a bridge guy that's going to come in somehow (trade or UFA). Maybe it's Leo. I don't know.

It's amazing how people have just completely written off Weber. He had a down year, but he's got all the tools to be a decent bottom-pairing guy. I think having Ott here should be a bit of a boost for him. I think he'll stick as a 5-6.

I feel like at this point FES will no longer be a line but they haven't shown anything to actually indicate that. I also haven't seen enough from Foligno to slot him in another position. It surprises me that no one has Luke Adam in their lineups. I really don't understand how he can go from being one of our top prospects to being non existent. On a more positive note I think that Grigorenko will be entering his second NHL season and Armia will fit in amazingly with him and Vanek. I think the success of this line could be what brings Vanek back to Buffalo after that season.
