Hypothetical: We get Luongo. Playoffs?

In any scenario where we get Roberto Luongo does he instantly make us a playoff team or is our roster to weak? We are a talented offensive team with some good pieces on D... But will we make the playoffs?

Send a message via AIM to Nazem Gretzky
And for that reason alone, we need to acquire him.

There are no issues with our offense, other than still needing a #1C.

Our defense has most of the pieces in place, plus with Carlyle implementing a more defense-minded system.

Our goaltending is our achilles heel. There will always be questions as to whether Reimer can regain his touch from the beginning of last season. It is a big gamble, and one that shouldnt be taken if it doesnt need to be. If Gillis does come down in his asking price, then Burke should jump all over it. It would solidify our goaltending for the next 6-7 years, at least.

Yes I think he does.

The way I look at it, last season we were a playoff team if we had more consistent goaltending.

I think he absolutely does. That doesn't mean we can't get in without him, but I think with guaranteed top-level goaltending we not only make it in, but have a chance to make some noise.

This is misleading because this thread implies we don't give anything up in return for Luongo.

If we get him for picks only? Yeah we make the playoffs.

If we have to give up say Carl Gunnarsson and Clarke MacArthur? Or as some Vancouver fans want.. Jake Gardiner? Then I'm unsure.

Gillis want too much!!!! He needs to lower his expectations. Remember whoever gets Luongo is on hook for 10 years. That's a long time not to mention alot of money.

Leafs finished in the bottom 5 last year in the standings but finished top 10 in offense across the league. It would seem like a fair assessment that an improvement in net could have been the difference between the Leafs maintaining a playoff spot or drastically falling out of playoff contention. If Luongo provides that stability, then I think that should mean playoffs, though if the team doesn't buy into Carlyle's system and tighten up on defense, Luongo will probably be faced with the familiar early playoff exits as he's used to in Vancouver.

The fact most agree the trade would make us a playoff team is also a testament to why the trade is a no brainer.

I don't care what anyone says, the primary reason this team fell off the map last year is because of unreliable goaltending, when we needed someone to stop the bleeding, instead we got panicky performance. I think a lot of us will be surprised how competitive we really are with a stud in the pipes.

Does that not depend at least a little on what we have to give up for Luongo?

Most of the people who remember how well Reimer can play won't be.

I think so. We have a pretty good team, despite where we finished. I think a goalie of Luongo's ability and stature would get us there next season alone. After that it gets hazy.

I honestly don't think so.

I'm not sure that Lu is going to steal that many wins.. he was complete garbage for the first two months last year and without Schnieder, Vancouver would have been in trouble...

The big question I have is what was the real Riemer? The guy we saw with a .922 sav% in his first year, or the guy that struggled after getting injured.

I would rather hold on to the assets we have and find out... If Reimer can rebound to a .910 goalie, the difference between him and Luongo in net will be marginal...

I don't think Lu gets us +12 points.

Reimer is a slow hand, slow lateral, marginal starter, let's not delude ourselves.

Most goalies are only marginal starters with holes in their game when they have less than a full season of experience. Reimer's proven he can roll with the big boys and make an impact on our team. I have faith in him.

In a word, yes. But at what cost to the long term plan?
