Do you want the Sharks to sign Alexander Semin?

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=638161

Just read what this article had to say about how Semin would do on the Sharks and I agree, I think he could add some good scoring depth to our offense. He's quick and he's got hands too. I'd love to see him in a Sharks uniform but only at the right price. Of course, we'd have to make cap space for him, but provided we did then I'm all for it. What do you guys say?

The article is kinda dumb... no way is Havlat playing on the 3rd line this year. No off season surgery so I expect him to come out of the gate flying. If they could get him to shoot more I would love to see him on Big Joes wing.

As far as Semin, to me it's a no brainer to bring him in. I'm fine with 4 or 5 years and as much as 6.5 mil. If he plays on Big Joes wing I bet Joe has a renaissance year because I think Semin if properly motivated is scarier in the offensive zone than marleau. If you could put Semin and Marleau on Thortons wings that line would dominate. Probably have to move Clowe and Murray though and fill out the bottom with WOr sharks or super cheap veterans. But Having pavs back on the 3rd line would make this team better IMO.

there's a reason he hasnt signed yet. As much as you want to brush off the divaness, the selfishness and lazyness, not to mention softness as being untrue and false. ALL 30 NHL teams have passed on him so far. If one or two say it, you can brush it off. But 30 people who are paid big bucks to try and build championship teams are ignoring this guy.

It's not a coincidence.

Captain Awkward meets Comrade Enigmatic. Haters be damned, if they are the top line with Jumbo that is one fast skilled goal scoring bonanza. Teams would be constantly underestimating them leading to many many goals.

We don't know the reason all teams have passed. Could be his salary demands are too high. If DW was interested (him signing a Russian is still a pipe dream, but go with it), he could come in on the cheap and offer terms for lower salary?

It would seem if Semin wants to play in the NHL (if not, then go to the K and earn that enormous salary), DW could swoop in and offer 5-6 years at a cap hit of less than $5M (I'm thinking cap hit of, say, $4.5M set up such that his first year or maybe two he earns $6M in salary). DW does and has signed or traded for people to such contracts (even before they play a day in Teal, like Brent Burns).

Let's say:

6 years, $28M, full NTC for first 3 years, modified NTC thereafter, salary: 6, 6, 4, 4, 4, 4 cap hit: $4.66M. Probably could bump this up somewhat given that 4.66M cap hit for Semin is a ridiculous steal.

If Semin wants to play in the NHL, it's clear he needs to take a pay cut, but can trade that for term. A team who can do that, and may be willing (in a world where DW would sign a Russian forward), would be the Sharks.

if anyone moves down to 3rd line, I think it's Clowe, not Havlat or Pavs again

but I think Semin needs the right locker room culture to excel as a player, and I don't think he'll find that in San Jose

my guess is he prefers Pittsburgh, Detroit, and the KHL in that order

Squeeven, you need to stop including those last options that are just too rational and too easy of a choice to pick. ****'s gotta be black and white.

That being said, yes. $5mil tops.

I disagree about the locker room culture remark. I think if he wants to prove himself going to a kinder less pressure market would give him the opportunity to excel and thrive, possibly even shed his "enigmatic" image, without constantly being questioned by media type and rabid fans. Playing on Jumbo's wing would be ideal, on maybe a two year prove yourself contract.

Hell no. The guy is lazy, very streaky and slow as ****. Add some attitude problems and multi-year deal with NTC (I would guess that's what hes looking) and we have a disaster.

Its an easy answer on this poll. It depends on the price.

All that said, we have to consider his personality fit on the team. I can understand someone like Nash wanting out. How long does he have to play on a non-playoff team before he decides he wants to win? This guy on the other hand has played with good players and on good teams and not found the right emotional fit. Thats not a good sign as to his emotional makeup and maturity.

But for the right price ....

From what I understand he has never really had a good center. Also, his speed is what we need.

DW should offer him exactly what he offered Doan. I have a feeling that for that same offer Semin would be a good value but Doan will end up being overpaid.
