He's definitely looked pretty good tonight, as you said, most or all of the goals weren't all his fault. A couple PP goals, and a couple very nice plays where he had no chance.

another big save by montoya to keep his team in the lead...came across nice and moved to the top of his crease in time to take away the angle and make the save

So Al likes to play "Cranium" eh? Thanks announcers.

UM = chicken with its head cut off

Montoya is doing his best to keep them in it.

Almost a tie game, Broncos goal waved off on account of one of their players standing in the crease.

poor call against UM, goalie interference when the goalie was way the hell out of his crease and the guy was knocked into him

and they score on the PP, 5-5

montoya did all he could, kind of goofy the way it happened but he had to dive across and hope he could get it

They are a better team than they are showing.

That was pretty save.

I like Al's attitude, maybe it was just this game but he seemed a little fiery.

The annoucers compared him to Grant Fuhr...can give up some goals in a game but comes up huge at important times in a game. Montoya saved the game for UM by that robbery at the end.

It's a game like this where I can see what the Ranger scouts were talking about.

Not often you get rave reviews after allowing 5 goals

Al should sue for non-support.From the US WJC team to Michigan. The Friday Michigan-Western Michigan in Ann Arbor was another crazy affair with Montoya getting abandoned left and right

Wow, people actually watched the same game I did. By that, I mean you saw Montoya play a great game while getting a total lack of defensive support.

I wish he would get recognized for his play, but unfortunately there's still plenty of "fans" lurking on U.S. College Hockey Online and elsewhere calling for his head. Seriously, about an hour after the game was over some bonehead started about the 10th "Is Montoya overrated??" thread in the past month, it's ridiculous. They naturally point to him giving up five goals (without mention of which three the scorer was undefended), rather than pointing to him saving about a dozen goals including that game saver with one second left. And he definitely showed some of that old swagger after it.

I'm not saying he's been great this year, because he was pretty inconsistent the first half of the season. But as a Michigan fan, I'm just sick of hearing everyone criticize his every move, like last night (even though the reality is he played a super game). It's nice to see some fans who actually saw the game and praise him for his effort.

A random question: Did anyone else think that Montoya's chest protector was absolutely gigantic? He looked like a Sumo wrestler out there.

IMO all goalies look like that these days. i think that's what they should cut down on, not the goalie pads. chest protectors are rediculus these days, goalies don't need that much padding

yeah it's frustrating sometimes...i thought he looked good last night and made some great saves...looked better than he did in the WJC's and couldn't do much on those goals...that last save was clutch. If i were a michigan fan, i'd be looking at the defensive effort the team puts in before i looked at montoya (going by last nights game anyways). you can't keep allowing the oddman breaks and the open men in the defensive zone they do...their coverage in the zone is weak and they don't tie up their men when they get into scoring position...don't pick up the late man in, cmon.

Bingo! Too many dumb penalties, too. Western was 6-for-13 on the power play this weekend. You're not going to win too many games allowing the opposition to convert nearly 50% of their PP chances (Michigan's kill percentage was 87.5% heading in to the weekend).

Without commenting on Montoya's play...

I would say that your best penalty killer is your goaltender, so the 6-13 is partly a reflection on Montoya. The Rangers' horrific penalty kill was a result of poor goaltending, just as much as anything else. No coincidence it's sucked the last seven seasons and the goaltending spot, even with Richter around, was pretty suspect. I think it got a lot better when Dunham had a good 2+ months to finish out his first season with the Rangers.
