My First Mock in 4 years...

Based on April 19th NHL standings:

1Florida - Nathan Mackinnon
2Colorado - Seth Jones
3Carolina - Jonathan Drouin
4Nashville - Alexander Barkov
5Tampa - Valeri Nicushkin
6Calgary - Sean Monahan
7Edmonton - Darnell Nurse
8Philadelphia - Nikita Zadorov
9New Jersey - Elias Lindholm
10Buffalo - Hunter Shinkaruk
11Phoenix - Max Domi
12Detroit - Alexander Wennberg
13Dallas - Rasmus Ristolainen
14Winnepeg - Bo Horvat
15Columbus (via NYR) - Curtis Lazar
16Columbus - Nicolas Petan
17Washington - Josh Morrissey
18Buffalo (via MIN) - Anthony Mantha
19New York Islanders - Ryan Pulock
20Ottawa - Robert Hagg
21Calgary (via STL) - Arturri Lehkonen
22Toronto - Kerby Rychel
23Columbus (via LA) - Jacob de la Rose
24San Jose - Valentin Zykov
25Boston - Samuel Morin
26Vancouver - Adam Erne
27Montreal - Fredrik Gauthier
28Anaheim - Ryan Hartman
29Calgary (via PIT) - Jordan Subban
30Chicago - JT Compher

-Sorry for the classic french canadian to the Habs pick, but I think at that point in the draft they go for it.

-I think Jones is BPA at 1st overall, just feel Florida needs a face to sell, along with Huberdeau, people should be excited to go watch games.

-toughest picks for me to decide on were Philly, Ottawa, San Jose, and Vancouver.

-I imagine most people won't like my picks for Calgary's 2nd pick or 3rd pick, Winnipeg's pick, de la Rose so high, and in general how the mock shook out.

I'd love to hear some comments.

If the oilers miss out on Monahan or Barkov then nurse is a possibility but it seem that ristolainen is more nhl ready If so they may take him, but I like nurse there.

Yeah, I just started looking through some other mocks on this site and noticed the Oiler fans like the NHL readiness of Ristolainen over Nurse.

I don't get it.

The Oilers don't need to force every pick they get into the lineup, I'm looking 3 or 4 years down the line, and a Nurse-Schultz pairing is scary.

I cannot see Calgary passing on Monahan.

it's not like Rasmus is NHL ready right now, i don't believe that he is....it's just that he'll probably be in the NHL sooner than Nurse. i don't see how either d-man could hurt as an Oiler pick...i don't think you can go wrong with either and it seems to be a matter of opinion as to which of the 2 will be better down the road.

I think the Oilers covet the traits that Nurse has, and looking at their NHL team, they need some competitive mean-spirited players.

----

I'm not actually all that fond of Jordan Subban, but he seems like a Calgary pick, small and skilled...I imagine they'd have an easier time 'reaching' for him at 29th, if they took a bit more size than I gave them with St Louis' pick.

Thanks for your comments.

Petan should go to a team, but it shouldn't be Columbus. No way.

Don't like De La Rose for them either.

Toronto take Fucale.

Subban will probably go mid 2nd or early 3rd.

Erne and Mantha should br higher.

Welcome back to drafting though :p

If the Devils land Elias Lindholm, I'll streak butt naked at the Prudential center, grab the mic at the podium and tell Bettman he can put our 2014 1st round pick where the sun don't shine.

A pairing of Klefbom-Ristolainen is also scary, having Justin Schultz on a different pairing too. To me, Ristolainen might have a lower ceiling than Nurse, but he's more of a 'sure thing.' Sounds like Nurse is really raw, but since Risto has played 2 years of Pro already he's more polished.

Petan is a very talented player, I don't see why Columbus would avoid him. Hell they're getting good contributions from small players right now(Atkinson and Calvert), who never had Petan's upside. I think if you can get a safe pick like Lazar, you can afford to take a big swing on a guy like Petan. So dangerous and smart.

-----

I have a hard time with goalies, so I just omit them. To be honest, I don't see what sets Fucale so far apart from Comrie.

---

Mantha is a scary pick for me, and Erne seems to be dropping (at least for ISS).

Thanks for the comments. I hope Toronto takes a goalie. Gives my Canucks a better chance at taking a higher ranked 'faller', which is what they tend to do in the 1st.

Petan is small, isn't physical and can't go into the corners and crash the net like the big guys can. It's not about production, even if he does produce to his potential it's not what Columbus needs in their pool.

I'd be very happy with Nurse if Mackinnon, Barkov and Monahan are all gone.

How much Petan have you seen?

Columbus has plenty of players that can crash and bang. It's like saying you'd rather have Wayne Simmonds than Claude Giroux.

If Petan produces to his potential he's a #1C.

I also measure physicality moreso in where and what he can do on the ice, and he isn't limited at the WHL level. He's all over the ice, head is constantly on a swivel examining the ice.

From my standpoint, its clear CBJ needs a skill infusion in the forward ranks. I love how they're transforming their team into highly competitive character guys.

I have no issue that you don't like the pick of Petan, I do however completely disagree with why you don't like it.

i am a huge fan of petan and imo most people do not realize how good he is. skill-wise he could be a top 5.

sure there are some thing debatable, but overall i would say it is a good mock.

only thing is that morgan klimchuk should definitely be in the top 30.

I would not take Petan at 16. I could see taking him at 23. His size is a major factor in the equation. I would not take him myself.

I prefer to take Zykov at 23. Replace Mantha with Petan. I like the draft if we come away with those 3 picks.

Besides Monahan, it's terrible for the Flames...

Way better options than Arturri Lehkonen and Jordan Subban.

Really? We have 1 guy over 6'0 (on the wing) who looks like he's going to make a stint in the NHL, our tallest guy is 6'3. I would hardly say we have plenty of players who can crash and bang, we have a lot of defensive forwards for sure, but that doesn't mean crash and bang. I would mainly say we only have 3 guys who are very physical, can put up some points, and have a chance of cracking the lineup soon, and only 1 of them is a center. I think we have enough skill guys with Zaar, Atkinson, Tynan and Marchessault who all have at least a decent chance to crack the lineup.

My point is I'd rather have a guy like Gauthier who has the potential to put up a lot of points and be physical, than a guy like Petan who just doesn't have the same sort of edge that someone like Gauthier does. Let's face it, Petan might not even hit 6'0, and in the NHL there's always a big question mark on guys who are small but skilled.

it's a good list though, if Florida get's 1st overall, and it's looking likely, they might just take MacKinnon and not Jones, but if Colorado gets 1st, they'll likely take Jones.

Agreed. I think Jones is the best player, but Florida already has the nice stable of defensman.

Mackinnon with Huberdeau will put butts in the seats.

------

Zykov vs Erne was definitely something I thought about.

Either way I think both Vancouver and San Jose take a forward.
