GDT: Wolf Pack @ Monarchs 1-9-05

I wasn't able to listen to the last 2 games, and I won't be able to listen to today's, either. I looked over the pointstreak gamesheets, and the game against the Pirates on Friday must have been some game to listen to, LOL. Unfortunately, the Pack lost last night, but I'm glad Chad got a couple of points. I'm sure they'll bounce back today against Manchester.

Good luck today, guys!! Beat the Monarchs!! Go Pack!!

Wolfpack up 2-0.

First goal by Ulmer assist to Nycholat.
Second goal by Moore from Hamilton and Giroux.

Wolfpack news:

D Jeff MacMillan is back in the lineup after getting a concussion.. D Steven MacIntyre is not playing and I dont know if he got sent back to Charlotte..

Edit : They added an assist to Giroux on the second goal.

Glad to see Moore...

back on the scoresheet. While Balej didn't score, I noticed he took three shots, so at least he's involved, unlike Lundmark, who's typical night seems to be taking one shot, at best. At this point, I think he should've stayed in Italy so we wouldn't have to see his lack of production.

High sticking penalty on Giuliano. Pack get a late power play with under a minute left. McGill calls a timeout, something our idiot coaches the past few years never did.

Scoooooooooooore!!!!! GIROUX on the rebound!!!!!!! Sounds like they really worked hard to get it. Wiseman backhanded it in front off Garon and Giroux potted it.

Rangers - Ottawa deal Revisited

At the time when I saw the De Vries deal for Rachunek and Giroux, I thought that Rangers would have to offer a bit more. Giroux almost made the Sens last year, and to be honest when I saw that we also got him in the deal along with Rachunek, I thought the Rangers won big time. Was Muckler drunk when he made the deal? I heard that De Vries was not playing good when he was playing with the Senators. Now my question to all Rangers fans, Senators fans, who do u think won this deal? Rangers got 2 good players for De Vries a stay at home dman who makes alot of money. If Giroux makes the Rangers in the future and performs well this will be one of the best deals Sather made at the deadline.

I liked the deal too. But it's only good if Rachunek does better than he showed and Giroux becomes a regular.

Considering...

that short term the Rangers will go nowhere, and that long term the Ranger would not have deVries (who wasn't that good to start with - he' not really a top 4 defeneman on a good team), the trade was a no-brainer, and regardless of how Giroux and Rachunek pan-out, at worst, it's a neutral transaction

I still dont like the deal unless Karl pans out to be a top 3 dman....Devries was a GREAT GREAT stay at home dman. Something the rangers were lacking in years passed..him and Kasper were racking up the +/- points. But im not ready to dismiss Karl yet..hes got some potential that we gotta get out of him.

BTW : GOOD JOB PACK! (3-0-0-0) against the top team.

I agree with Fletch here, De Vries was an able 3rd pair defenseman who came out and said that if the Rangers were going to rebuild he didn't want to be here. He only signed with the Rangers because he wanted to play for a contender (so he said, the more cynical amongst us can think it was for the money). The more minutes De Vries played, the more his liablities became apparent.

As for the trade, to this point, Rachunek played like a little lost lamb for the few games he was here, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until he's had 30-40 games with the Rangers. Giroux is an interesting pickup--I saw a game he was in before the trade and liked him then. He was pretty solid during the playoffs last season and seems to be continuing his development this season. But, before we declare him a steal, he has to show that he can translate his game into the NHL and be effective there.

we obviously won that deal. by the time the lokc out is over i think devries contract would be up right? now rachunek may not have played well last year, but heck he was adjusting from a top gun team to a rebuilding team with no chemistry. lets not forget he was prolly mad pissed off. he just got traded from a team that was looking good going into the playoffs to a crap pile team. Someting tells me giroux and rachuneck are gonna turn a few heads.

you gotta look at it this way... in terms of potential, we totally won the trade in a land slide. And potential is all we were looking for. You also have to figure that it was kind of known that the NHL would go into a lock out, so having Devries around would have been a complete waste. At least we got young talent with upside.

I think we only "win" the deal if Giroux maxes out his potential and becomes a gritty second liner (unlikely, but possible). Otherwise I'd say it's win/win for both teams. DeVries is a short-term upgrade over Rachunek for the Sens and helps them in their quest for the cup. Simultaneously the Rangers got younger and cheaper. Good trade all around.

well if you wanna look at it as a win/win, that is fine too. i didnt even think about that, but you're right. Both teams did win on this deal, so basically, a good trade.

I was against signing de Vries from the start, so I wasn't disappointed at all to see him go. I perhaps am not as down on his abilities as some, but I did think he was overrated and wasn't what the team needed...although I thought he did okay during his brief stay here.

As for Rachunek, I was really disappointed in his play in the handful of game he was here...he made Poti look like a reliable defenseman. It's hard to assess how he's doing in Europe, but he has been a minus on both the Czech and Russian teams he's played on this season.

And Giroux, I'm not a fan...I still doubt he'll ever be an NHL regular. He's not overly fast or physical and doesn't really have a defensive game. He's mildly (in NHL terms) gifted with respect to offensive talent, but again I don't see him being quick enough with his hands and feet to make it in the NHL. I certainly don't consider him a steal...just another borderline prospect who might make it if everything lines up right.
