Jets to get 2016 Heritage Classic

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/spo...235188251.html

Quote:
"The NHL has confirmed to me they are going to do an outdoor game in Winnipeg. I don't have a specific date to announce but it would be our preference that we do it in the 2015-16 season," Chipman told the Free Press Monday evening in the lobby of the Inn at Spanish Bay.
Quote:
The league was originally interested in having the Jets host an outdoor game next season but offered Chipman a choice between the two seasons and he opted for 2016 to augment his team's fifth anniversary plans.
Quote:
"We can add around 8,000 seats to get our seating to just under 41,000," said Bombers CEO Wade Miller. "We'd be open to working with the Jets or the NHL if we get a Grey Cup and they have an outdoor game that winter. We'd like to have the seats up for the Banjo Bowl and keep them in place through both events if it's a fit for both organizations."

Quote:
Winnipeg Jets co-owner Mark Chipman said over a year ago he would love to bring a “Heritage Classic” to our city and at this weeks NHL Board of Governors meetings in California, Chipman says Commissioner Gary Bettman has confirmed Winnipeg will get an outdoor game in 2016.

Hells YEAH! That'd be awesome.

It'd be perfect to have the game in October or November as Winnipeg in December or January is just plain too cold to have an outdoor game. See the original Heritage Classic in Edmonton where it was -30 and completely ridiculous.

Chicago would be the perfect opponent to me. Division rival with lots of Winnipeg connections.

My guess is it will be against Minny and lets hope they don't do it Dec-Feb. -35 with a 40k north wind might be a bit much for the hockey world to witness.

I hope we play Anaheim or Tampa or some team from the south and it gets that cold, players might just die.

Cool! I hope it's against a team like Minnesota, although it would be amusing if it was against Phoenix.

Now that game is confirmed, we turn to who you want to face and a potential 3rd jersey on fifth anniversary of Jets return.

AVS fan here, I would love to see Avalanche in that game, but I think Heritage Classic is reserved for Canadian teams, so I think it would be team from Canada as your opponent. I think Edmonton could be that team because they played outdoor game way back in 2003. It could also be Toronto, but NHL probably take into account that they play this year Winter Classic.

This is awesome! November a week before or after Grey Cup would seem perfect to me. I say give us a division rival before another Canadian team, but who cares no one will be cheering for them anyway!

I think Sportsnet will care to have high TV ratings in two Canadian provinces instead of one Especially with new 5,2 billions contract

I can see it being the Leafs as a Heritage Classic game with two Canadian teams.

Which, in a sense, is too bad, because I'd much prefer the division rival theme. Chicago would be great, but Minnesota would also be fantastic.

I do think it would be hilarious if the game was in late January and we were playing one of the sun-belt teams (not that I think the players care much, it's more the impact on their home town fans). Think how it would look on the broadcast with 41,000 drunken Winnipeggers slamming back beers outdoors in -40C weather. The TV people would be interviewing the fans, asking them if it's cold or what they're doing after the game? You just know some guy would say he's going to get a Slurpee.

Great news, 41,000 for the classic, keep the seats up after the Banjo Bowl weekend and cap it off with a grey cup game !

A third jersey to boot, perfect time to release it, great news...could we see the classic uniform of pre 96 return ???

if it's a cnd team, then it would be Calgary. they haven't had a heritage classic planned, have they?
but, to be honest, the most logical one would be Edmonton. THAT would be something special.
if it's a US team, then it really should be Minnesota.

I am super pumped about this! What a great year for Winnipeg sport! Hopefully both teams are competitive by then

I think it will be the Oilers or Flames. It will be a Canadian team and despite it not really blossoming yet, those are our 2 natural rivals.

Its the Heritage Classic - so it will be a Canadian team for sure.

Does it have to be an East opponent??

If so - I would say it be the Leafs considering we already gave the Habs the spotlight by having them in the inaugural game.

If not, I would prefer it be one of the Alberta teams.

I agree. Jets 2.0 may not have much of a rivalry with those two just yet - but Jets 1.0 sure did.

And if the heritage/3rd jersey is a nod to Jets 1.0 then it would be appropriate it be one of those Alberta teams.

It would be cool if it was against Edmonton, and we wore a WHA inspired jersey. I'm not fond of the original WHA logo, but it would be a neat idea in a game vs edmonton. The NHL might not think it's as cool, but... ;P

I would love to see a "Mega Stars" game where Teemu, Essensa, Housley, etc play Edmonton's alumni. Not likely to happen, but can you imagine...

****

That is one thing I never thought of.
It's the alumni game.

WOW. That in itself will be worth the price of admission.

Hawerchuk and Selanne on a line.....
