Shane Doan to Buffalo

Assuming that Doan chooses not to resign in Phx, should Buf take a run at trying to sign him seeing as they are pushing towards becoming a tougher team? Hes a physical player that brings great leadership as well as score and can easily take the "C" if we so desire to give it to him. So do you guys think that he would be a good fit here or not??

I'd like the move on a short-term deal (2 years, maybe 3 max), but I don't think Doan wants to come to Buffalo...he likely wants to stay West IMO.

For Doan's sake I would like him to sign with a contender. Think he would look go in San Jose or even Pittsburgh. Minny is a good choice as well.

And not one of those teams made it to the last conference final.

So there's only 4 contenders this season? Gotcha

I just don't see him going to Buffalo.
He'll either want to sign with a team that's near Phoenix, or sign with a contender to win his first cup.
It's extremely unlikely that Buffalo will be competing for the cup next season.

Absolutely not. I wouldn't even put Phoenix in the same category as the usual contenders who I think are still more likely to win it all. My only point was that Doan won't leave for a chance to compete because he's got that at home. It will he for achance to compete AND stability.

While I don't see it happening, how can anyone say any reasonably good team with a good, and sometimes great goalie, and a deep talented defense won't be contending for a cup?

If you can make the playoffs you can contend for a cup, and 16 teams make the playoffs...

I think SJ is a perfect fit for Doan.

I'm pretty sure there will be 30 teams at least taking a look at him. I think if Buffalo threw a really long term with lots of money at him, he'd take a look. But at 2-3 years he'll probably get the same or better from a team in the west.

LA, Anaheim, Dallas and even Vancouver would be more realistic options for Doan. But after seeing Jagr sign in Dallas, who knows, maybe Doan does sign somewhere no one expects.

I don't think they'll be anyone's favorites to win anything for a while, but Buffalo does have an outside chance. For the 2nd half of last season, they were one of the best teams in the league (just not quite good enough to dig themselves out of the hole they dug earlier in the season). Buffalo has a pretty deep defense, and a goalie who's easily in the top 5 of the league when he's on his game. I'm not even sure they'll make the POs with the roster as it stands right now, but they're also not a team I would completely write off either.

So what you are saying is San Jose and Pittsburgh and Minny are not stable teams? gotcha

Would love Doan, but I doubt he comes to Buffalo and good for him, he deserves to win a cup and I doubt we're winning a cup in the next year or so.

Why would Doan come to Buffalo? He wants a cup not to finish in 9th/10th place the next 3 seasons.

not sure why he'd want to play so far away from his fam on a 9th place team.

Maybe so - but don't discount the presence of former Doan-teammate Teppo Numminen on the Sabres coaching staff nor the commitment level that Pegula has in his quest for a championship.

I think LA or SJ or maybe Colorado if he goes somewhere other than Phoenix.

Vancouver should offer 18 million over 3 years.
Guy is exactly what the Nucks need to do another Cup run.

He'd be a great veteran presence and inspirational leader, but I think there are better, more mutually beneficial situations out there for him. My money is he stays in PHX.
