I'm sick of this too. I don't want Doan if he really wants $7.5M per, but come on, I'm really sick of it.

Seriously, at least the Nash thing is over but this summer has been like standing in a long line at the DMV.

Put it in the other perspective, he wants a big retirement nest egg if he doesn't get to finish out in Phx. Not selfish per se, but pretty expressive of his priorities.

I don't blame him for any of that. He's a UFA and can take whatever offer he wants and wait however long he wants. I just don't get the judgmental attitude towards him. I don't remember Doan or his agent setting an actual deadline or saying that they want this and this. But people are still being harsh towards him because these dates pass that have more to do with the Coyotes franchise situation rather than Doan himself and look down on him. I just don't get that leap.

Same for me. It is what it is. With that said, if I were DW I would take a pass because on top of else, I imagine the distraction of being away from family would diminish his game. Tip my cap and move on.

Then the question is if we don't sign Doan, where do we find the wingers that we need to upgrade? I have a tough time that trading is a real option for this team at this point when they have very few assets and moving them either opens a hole up or makes the future even more bleak.

Hasn't Doan already set two deadlines for a decision? I believe they were 7/9 and 7/16.

If I am DW, I look long and hard in the mirror for having gotten to the point where the Sharks are. He has traded away depth for "stars" and deadline "upgrades". Essentially out of ammunition or at least low on it. Plus his evaluations of relative talent have been suspect. I wouldn't create more holes with 2 for 1 deals. GMs in his shoes are looking in the bargain bin for reclamation projects. DW hasn't been real good at spotting the kind that are worthwhile in that area. Although he wasn't a guy who fit the bill, Latendresse was one of those this year. Wellwood was a year ago.

I believe that his camp said that he wouldn't sign before July 8th. That's not really setting a deadline. The next date was something he said he wanted to wait for...again, not a deadline.

I find it funny that his Agent labeled Doan as a "Legend". Really?

How many Hart Trophies does he have?
scoring titles?
Conn Smythes?
Stanley Cup rings?

yeah, didn't think so.

the only people that deserve 7.5M even with all the dumbass contracts being handed out are players that will someday be in the HHOF.

The most I would do is 3 year 15 million. First year cap hit would be 6, next year 5, next year 4. We would have to cap dump someone whether it be a defensman or Handzus for it to work. Though a 6 million cap hit is way too much for Doan, it would draw him over from the free agent market knowing hes about to get a big payday.

Doan is better than any forward we can acquire through trade without giving up tons of valuable assets. I think it would be a great idea to sign him instead of getting players through trades. Plenty of teams are still below the cap floor and may be willing to take a cap dump (Handzus). Otherwise we can give up Murray for a cheaper defenseman/picks and prospects.

FORWARDS
Patrick Marleau ($6.900m) / Joe Thornton ($7.000m) / Joe Pavelski ($4.000m)
Ryane Clowe ($3.625m) / Logan Couture ($2.875m) / Martin Havlat ($5.000m)
Tommy Wingels ($0.775m) / Michal Handzus ($2.500m) / Shane Doan ($6.000m)
T.J. Galiardi ($0.950m) / Andrew Desjardins ($0.640m) / Adam Burish ($1.850m)
DEFENSEMEN
Dan Boyle ($6.667m) / Brent Burns ($5.760m)
Brad Stuart ($3.600m) / Marc-Edouard Vlasic ($3.100m)
Douglas Murray ($2.500m) / Jason Demers ($1.250m)
Justin Braun ($1.250m) /
GOALTENDERS
Antti Niemi ($3.800m)
Thomas Greiss ($0.588m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $70,200,000; CAP PAYROLL: $70,629,167; BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (21-man roster):- $429,167

Pretty solid.

well your in luck bro, 3 years 15m is a 5m cap hit, not a 6m, so it works cap wise

Can you make the cap hits different each year? I'm not only talking about salary. I wouldn't pay a 38 year old Doan 5 million. 4 million makes it a little easier to digest.

Nope. You can make salaries differ year to year, but the cap hit is constant throughout the contract. Otherwise someone would give Steven Stamkos a $15M cap hit one year and then $1M cap hit the next year so it'd be easy to fluke your way to a Cup.

I honestly think people on this board, do not know what a deadline actually is.

dead·line
[ded-lahyn]
noun

1. the time by which something must be finished or submitted; the latest time for finishing something: a five o'clock deadline.

2. a line or limit that must not be passed.

3. (formerly) a boundary around a military prison beyond which a prisoner could not venture without risk of being shot by the guards.

Agreed. Doan never said "I'll make my decision on this day." He said he'd make a decision NO SOONER THAN a certain day. Just because someone says they won't make a decision before July 8th doesn't mean they'll make their decision ON July 8th.

They still set deadlines. They weren't deadlines to get a contract signed, but they were still deadlines. There is more than one kind of deadline.

Can't be smug unless you use caps to make a point. Didn't you get the memo?
