Nothing too official yet. Guy seems legit, not sure though.

If true, damn it. Wanted him in Buffalo. It'd be a good signing by the Rangers. He may be getting old but still a very nice 4th line center who is good at PKing and winning faceoffs. Another veteran presence to add as well.

Looks to be confirmed; it is on the Rangers board at least.

According to a poster on the Rangers board, this guy works for NHL.com and the Caps, so it seems he's legit.

Never liked him. Is he the type of player to grow on you?

Makes me think Ranger's picked up an extra center with the intention of shipping one off for Nash...

Or it means that they lost John Mitchell and Fedotenko that they wanted to bring in a veteran who was very good on faceoffs and could contribute on the PK. But yeah, the whole ,"IT'S BECAUSE OF RICK NASH?!?!?!" thing is more fun I guess.

Just a typical solid 4th line center. The Rangers needed to get better on faceoffs, so if that was one of your pet peeves last year, Halpern will surely help. He won 58.3% and finished fifth in faceoffs last year. He was a healthy scratch in the playoffs, however.

Won't do much physically and he isn't big or young, but he's going to be most useful on the PK and taking draws.

Mitchell and Feds were not centers and were both replaced by Asham and Pyatt.

As it stands we have

Richards
Stepan
Anisimov
Boyle

Where will Halpern go?

Yeah. This may mean Anisimov is getting dealt. Boyle can make the most out of his ice time. Not an ideal 3C but we could do far worse than Boyle.

So no, he's not that far off when saying it could mean a trade is in the works.

He should of been in the line up. He was after Beagle broke his foot and yet still decided to go out and take face off in OT on the PK.

Huh? Mitchell most definitely took faceoffs for us. Do I need to remind you of Staal's overtime goal against the Capitals? As for Fedotenko, I was referring to the PK.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but teams usually have more than twelve forwards. Is it really such a farfetched idea that Halpen would be the 13th forward? Or that one of Stepan or Anisimov could move to wing for some games?

Your sarcasm isn't needed. I am very aware of this. Also, Mitchell took a FEW face offs. He was not a regular face off guy.

He's not a 13th forward.

He was scratched in the playoffs in favor of Keith ****ing Aucoin, who was literally useless.

A good 4th liner for sure... but we have Beagle so he's expendable.

Anisimov's future is probably at Wing, or on another team.

This signing solidifies for me that 2 of Hagelin, Dubinsky, and Anisimov will not be here next year.

A few points

1. Depth at center is not a bad thing
2. Pivots to take draws in the defensive zone who have success doing so is a good thing
3. Artem Anisimov did not really play very much center last season. He was moved over to wing just like Dubinsky was.

NY is trying to fill the gap left by Prust signing in Montreal. Prust provided a decent package in that he was willing to fight anyone, played a decent PK and brought the wood on the forecheck.

If Halpern is to sign in NY its a welcome addition but I doubt he laces them up for more than 60-70 games at most. If he can post the 25+ points he put up for Montreal it will be a very successful season for him and for NY.

If this is true I like this signing alot! I wanted a bonefide 3rd 4th line faceoff center that can play the bottom 6 role & only that role.

it's only a 1 year deal and low cap hit. Worth it to have the depth and veteran presence.

Free agency has slowed to one signing every other day, and apparently irrelevant ones, at that. Bad enough that this year's crop is weak, but now we have to wait weeks for the Kostitsyns and Wellwoods to make up their minds? The season can't start soon enough.
