Another depth signing.

What type of player is he?

Just so long as we're not going into the season relying on Mike Haley as our 13th forward.

I'm good with this as a depth signing. Plays on the PK too.

And by the way... 58.4% on faceoffs, for all you guys who were harping so much on needing a faceoff guy. I wasn't, but a lot of others were.

Excellent signing then. He should be really cheap. Great 4th line center, although that means they're thinking Boyle will likely be the 3rd line center for you guys, which I don't necessarily know what to think of yet. Both are great 4th line guys.

Anyway, Halpern's great at what he does. Great PKer and faceoff-man as well as another veteran and leader. If you needed to get better at faceoffs, you got your guy. Halpern won 58.3% and finished fifth in the League in that category.

Interesting.

Maybe this is in fact a prelude to a bigger move.

They've been trade bait for a while now.

Adding another depth forward further solidifies this.

Arty can't go that's ridiculous. It's gotta be Boyle I'd much rather have Richards, Stepan, Anisimov, Halpern than Richards, Stepan, Boyle, Halpern.

This almost certainly means someone's on their way out...right?

I like the signing, but if Boyle is our third line center this year we are going to have problems. He is capable of single handedly killing our depth offense.

If he is the 4th line, its ok, but third line will be REALLY frustrating. Pray Miller makes the club.

No, no it doesn't. Look, with this signing the Rangers now have 13 NHL forwards (14 if you include Haley), which is exactly what they went into last season with. This kind of move would've been made with or without a trade.

mark my words, you guys will end up loving this move ... he brings a lot to the table .... even though he is a lot older now, he still has a lot of useful tools on the 4th line or depth chart.

Pyatt is probably going to be on the third line. I don't like it but I have accepted it.

Hagelin-Richards-Gaborik
Kreider-Stepan-Callahan
Dubinsky-Boyle-Anisimov
Pyatt-Halpern-Asham

Balanced lineup. They replaced Feds, Mitchell and Prust with Pyatt, Halpern and Asham. Lateral moves but the key is that the new 4th line can get 3rd period minutes late in close games.

Honestly, if Sather is able to swing Boyle in a package for a substantial player, anything and I mean anything bad he has done(Jessiman/Drury/Gomez/Redden)will be completely forgiven in my book.

So we will roll a 4th line of Boyle-Halpern-Pyatt, and both Rupp and Asham will be healthy scratches? The same Rupp that the organization raves about and Torts loves. If that is the case we are going to have zero enforcers in the lineup and that is not the Rangers way.

Don't see how this is a prelude to anything.

It made no sense to have Rupp and Asham potentially in the lineup at the same time.

They had to add another bottom six player. They were poor on faceoffs last season. We lost two of our better PKers in Prust and Fedotenko.

The logical thing was to make the extra bottom six player a center.

No one moves out and the roster is more complete.

Boyle or Anisimov move to wing. Anisimov played a lot of wing last season.

Hagelin Richards Gaborik
Kreider Stepan Callahan
Dubinsky Boyle/Anisimov Pyatt
Asham/Rupp Halpern Anisimov/Boyle

That's 13 forwards.

No one has to move anywhere.

There was a need for one more forward.

I don't see any preludes.

Howson still wants the moon and the stars. Weber isn't becoming a Ranger. Ryan isn't becoming a Ranger.

They simply addressed a need.

I believe we almost had Halpern in a big deal at the deadline, back when Sather first came to the Rangers. I think it was something like Graves, Malholtra etc. for Simon, Halpern etc. Anyway, I like this move a lot, nice to have a go-to-guy on the important draws.

Stepan
Anisimov
Boyle
Pyatt
Asham
Rupp
Halpern
Haley

Agreed with the rest of your post, but if Anisimov is still here... I don't want to see him on the wing. It's a big part of the struggles he had last year. He's much, much more effective playing at center, despite his faceoff issues.

Boyle is nice, but a 4th liner at best

The only guy who should be mad is Rupp. Dubinsky and Anisimov are perfect on the 3rd line. Kreider, Callahan and Anisimov can all play RW while Gaborik is out.

There's no need to add a scorer while Gaborik is hurt. Kreider can seize that opportunity. He played RW at BC.

Honestly if we don't make a move our roster is pretty damn good right now...

Hagelin-Richards-Gaborik
Kreider-Stepan-Callahan
Dubinsky-Anisimov-Boyle
Pyatt-Halpern-Rupp/Asham

That's not a bad set of lines at all...
