Sabres defensemen for a center

Currently the Sabres have a logjam at the blueline, the line separates the players in the minors.

Myers
Ehrhoff
Sekera
Leopold
Regehr
Weber
Sulzer
-------------------
Pysyk
McNabb
Brennan
Pardy

A few notes:

-UFA for next year are Regehr, Leopold, and Pardy.
-Brennan will have to clear waivers before being able to play in the AHL.
-Obviously Ehrhoff and Myers are virtually untouchable unless it's a massive overpayment.
-Forward pieces in a trade more than likely include Stafford, Gerbe, and Leino if anybody is willing to eat the contract.

Sabres need a good 1b/2 center to provide depth for Ennis and Hodgson.

I'd trade you Cullen but he has a limited NTC.

Problem is, he's played mostly wing in his career. Not really what the Sabres need, either - big, but not all that physical, and inconsistent.

The Sabres are ideally looking for a 2b or 3rd line center that's big, good defensively, and can chip in on offense.

Huge Matt Cullen fan right here and if he'd waive I'd love him here. Wanted him the last time he hit the market and signed with you guys. Ideally, I'd like to move either Leo or Weber.

We don't need a 1b/2, we need a 2/3 on a short contract (between 1 and 3 years) to back Hodgson and Ennis and act as a placeholder for Grigs/Girgs.

Regin from Ottawa might fit the part, but health has been a concern.

Brenan has an absolute bomb from the point. Loved watching him every game in Rochester, if any team needs a young OFD he is the guy.

I think that Cullen For Leopold might be fair, but I like Cullen a lot as well and it'd be tough to lose him.

Although Regier never named the player, he publicly admitted that the Sabres made a UFA center the exact same offer as what he got from the team he signed with but the player chose to play for his hometown team for family reasons. Everyone connected the dots to know Cullen was the guy the Sabres wanted. If Cullen had a choice then, he'd never leave his hometown team now - especially after the Parise / Suter additions?

But, hey, since the hometown angle seems to be fresh on the Wild's mind now, maybe they'd be interested in Leopold as another Minnesota-born boy. Maybe they'd be willing to deal Setoguchi...

That's a subjective stance - you're banking on Ennis or Hodgson being capable of handling a 1st line role and being productive doing so, when neither of them has ever been exposed to such responsibilities. It's an overly optimistic view, which is fine - but there's equal validity in believing that the Sabres would be smarter to slot those two into 2nd / 3rd line roles and allow them more time to grow while a proven 1st line center is added in the interim.
