Should Bjugstad Wait Another Year

Unless he is a lock to make the team and make some noise, it seems we are better off having play out his last year of college. Might have the added benefit of boosting Rau's play while he is there.

I suspect if he decides to leave school early, it will be because the organization is not planning on adding another top 6 veteran forward.

We want Bjugstad playing in the top 6 if he's here. We want to develop a Getzlaf, not a Gratton.

Not to pick nits, but he was a sophomore last year. He has two years of college left, FYI.

He actually has only one more year to get his degree, he has been fast-tracking and taking summer programs.
I'm 50/50 on him forfeiting his last year. It would be great for him to finish school and make a run at a championship but we could use him next year for sure.

I'd love for him to compete for a spot here but I can see him going back to Minny. Which is cool so we can see him & Rau together again. I'm not sure if he's really ready for the NHL yet anyway.

It pains me, but yes... he should probably go back to Minnesota. It's the safe thing to do.

I really want to see what he can do against the pro level, even in training camp, but for his own sake I hope he stays in school. It's really a no-brainer for him, all he loses is potentially a year at the pro level, but he gains a degree that could be a good back up plan.

I'd prefer to have him wait one more year. If we are in dire need of another center, Shore is our best option at this point.

I rather him sign a contract and at worst play in the AHL next year.

I suspect he will sign here if they tell him he has made the team. As far as his role with the Panthers, he will be a 3rd or 4th liner his first year. None of the rookies will be rushed into top line roles, not even Huberdeau (although Hubs will be a 3rd liner not a 4th, and will probably be on the 2nd line for injuries). Im pretty sure the Panthers will develop our young centers much the same way the Kings developed Anze Kopitar. Kopi was not rushed into a top 6 role and they didnt put any pressure on him, even though they all wanted him to be the first line center that he now is. Jugs definitely has the size to be a bottom 6 guy so they will bring him along slow in that role. At leasst thats how I see it going.

Hubs will be in the top six. Bank it.

Huberdeau has no business on a checking line.
Sticking Huberdeau with 4th line grinders would be pointless.
He will be in the top 6, because that's the only role where he can really be successful - playing with skilled players.

Bjugstad could play on the bottom 6 with his big frame, but rather than see him getting 10 minutes a night, I'd rather see him back in MN.

Stay in school for one more year. Tear it up, win the championship and prepare for a whole new battle at the pro level.

Well, I'll be happy to bet you an "I told you so" that he starts the season on the 3rd line. When will he get promoted? I don't know, but Im pretty sure that he will start on the 3rd line based on how Gudbranson was handled this last year. In fact Id go so far as to say that giving hubs a top 6 role right off is the wrong thing to do.

What would happen if they signed him and he didn't make the Panthers? Would he go to the AHL or is he too young?

Ahl if he doesn't make the panthers. No age limit for NCAA players/European players going to AHL.

Agree 110%. It kills me to watch talented young goal scorer have to start on 4th line or even 3rd lines...coaching nonsense.

I could see Bjugstad on the third line, but not the 4th line, so long as he is paired with players like Goc & Bergenheim rather than players like Smithson & Parros... and so long as he is getting decent minutes.

Putting Huberdeau on a line without a goal scorer would be pointless. You are developing a play maker. You can't do that without giving him finishers.

Yeah, lets do to Huberdeau what NYI did to Nino. Sounds like a solid plan.

Nino should not have been on NHL ice yet.

Are you suggesting that we sent Huberdeau back to junior?
