That weber trade is awful. That's a lot to give up for one guy.
Here's my simpler plan.
Sign Getzlaf and Perry at all costs next offseason. We have the cap space to do it. I think we have 12m now and we'll have 20 mil next summer with Lombardi and Connolly gone. If we manage to get these two players then kessel would be great to keep.
Try to trade for Bobby Ryan. (Colborne + Grabovski + Blacker/Holzer/Percy + 2nd 2013)
It's likely Reilly will play in the 2013 season and that one of Blacker/Holzer will be up full time with the team, so we need to get rid of some defencemen so we can utilize these cheap contracts.
I don't know what we can get for Gunnarsson, but I will assume he's not in the long term plans.
2013 October opening lineup.
Perry - Getzlaf - Kessel
Lupul - JVR - Ryan
FA - Kadri - Frattin
Ross - Mcclement - Komorav
Even assuming all these trades could happen (which is ludicrous), I'm still unsure about that line-up.
The 1st line is pretty solid, though I'm not sure how much of an upgrade (if any at all) JVR+Ryan is over Lupul+Kessel and that would be an amazing 1st pairing, but there's not really much going on after that.
No upgrade in goal, the bottom 6 stays the same, excluding Komisarek our bottom 4 d have a combined 1 year of NHL experience, and for our 2nd line we replace Grabovski+MacArthur with Doan+Kreider (another rookie) and insert another rookie of our own.
It would make the offseason exciting, but I don't really see the point of it all.
That's not really a better team then before... Also 3 new players being assigned leadership roles ?
Plus you say we won't get what we paid for kessel back. And then you expect the return to be, staal who is better then Hamilton, Kreider a top prospect who not better then seguin but could end up playing a bigger role or nyr then seguin for Boston. And the first is better thn knight
