Doan is 34 yrs old & with a 4 yr contract he would be 38/39 yrs old at the end of the contract about what Alfie is now. IMO he would be a 1st line player for the next two seasons & would then drop a line for the following two seasons after Alfie retires. Doan is a quality character guy by all accounts (captain), he's a tough gritty 1st line player who can still produce including in the playoffs where it counts the most. He would be another great example for the young prospects in this organization. & would be very affordable for this franchise since Ottawa is $3 mil or so from the cap floor.
And if Garrioch is right & the cap goes down & some teams have to shed players Ottawa would still be in a position to add some quality players. While I doubt the cap goes down a lot maybe $5 to $10 mil it could get frozen for several seasons at say $60 mil. Ottawa would still have lots of room especially if player salaries also got a small cut. By adding Doan a quality player moves down a line improving the team as a whole. I don't see a down side to it at all because Doan is a stand up guy unlike a player like Semin who has plenty of issues.
If Murray could add Brenden Morrow than Ottawa would have two gritty, character players with proven playoff production that they could spot anywhere in the lineup to bolster production. Morrow wouldn't cost all that much & Doan would not cost any assets. It's exactly what this team needs IMO, an infusion of character, grit, guts, leadership & great examples especially for the prospects that are coming. It's a move for today & for the future of this team to see how two very good veteran NHL players prepare & dedicate themselves to their sport. Once Alfie, Doan & Morrow are ready to retire Ottawa's blue chip prospects should be NHL tested by then & ready to take their place.
