What do u expect from him next year? And the next 4 after that. This reminds me of the Sarich signing in a way when he signed his first long term deal with us.
Expectations are different, cuz they are completely different players, obviously.
I'm gonna say I expect him to have a career year. He's playing with better Dmen in Gio and JBo. I already like our coach more than Washingtons last 2. And our PP did get better when Cammy came back, now we get him all year.
I want 50+ points from him and can live with a -10. I also want the minutes more spread out instead of mass minutes given out to few. I don't think this out of the question and it's def possible it can happen.
I can't see him being any worse than Dion in his final years with us.
I think he will be a good point producer and an ok D-man. But one thing I would like to say is that once he puts up points we will appreciate his contract more and more.

Less than 45 points and ill be disappointed. Guy is 1 dimensional and he got that got that contract for one reason. So he better produce.
This.
If he gets under 40 points, it's a failure. I could see that happening in Sutter's system but I hope all this hype about our new offensive coach is true and Wideman excels like he never has before.
He's not that good in his own zone....so he better put up points.
45 points is what i expect him to put up.
As long as he's not a TOTAL disaster in his own zone..he'll be worth what he gets paid.
I'm so sick of people saying that he's overpaid.
THIS IS WHAT SECOND PAIRING GUYS ARE WORTH THESE DAYS
Wideman, Garrison, Carle.....it may seem like a lot..but these guys are worth 5 million...people have to get used to it.

No. Teams that draft, and get 2nd pairing guys internally pay around 4-4.5
Players have always gotten more in FA. They aren't worth 5+.

Fair enough...if you go the UFA route you obviously have to pay a premium.
entry or 2nd lvl contracts can save you money too...but drafting and developing a player from scratch and having him get to UFA eligibility, you will still probably get a bit of a home discount.
maybe save a million?
We sure aren't keeping him around for his offense.
I get that. He's a big body used to clear the front of the net. But he gets burned one on one a lot like Dion did, and his mobility is awful. He does bring an element with his size, but as far as clearing the zone, puck battles, etc. he isn't that great. Our options wet limited for the big body. I don't think Sutter was wrong for putting him on press box watch, but I think there are elements of his game this team will need and appreciate.
I like Sarich but I think he can be a defensive liability when players lose their fear of him and dangle the $hit outta him
JBO for sure. Gio is fine by himself but he can't babysit like Jay. Who took care of Butler on the top pairing for most of the year.
Makes sense to me
So what are the D Pairings? I would prefer something like this as I think/want to give Brodie a chance so he can take it to the next level!
Butler takes a lot less minutes and hopefully he can develop as he was rushed and over played last year

With actual ice time rank in brackets as you'll see Bouwmeester ,Wideman & Giordano get plenty of opportunity on the PP with a forward (Tanguay) playing the other point on one unit.
