I'm not sure how I feel about statues in general...but I suppose if you were gonna start somewhere, Martin-Perreault-Robert would be it.

Sucks that Martin won't be there when they unveil it though.

This is excellent news, I just hope it's well-done from an artistic standpoint as a poorly done statue can be quite embarrassing.

I wonder how they'll pose them.

I hope it's gigantic, and on top of the FNC.

Maybe something along the lines as a tall narrow pyrmid with each side having their facial features with their name and number underneath.

I think statues at sports arenas are dumb.

Not if they're done well - the Gretzky statue in Edmonton and Orr statue in Boston are examples.

Pegula wants the plaza in front of the arena to be more of a public place of congregation so putting a commemorative statue makes a lot of sense IMO.

I LOVE this! When attending the Draft in Pittsburgh they had Mario statue. It was absolutely awesome and a centerpiece of nearly every picture. Can't wait to see this!

This is great news, the plaza needs to be improved and this could be done really well.

Got a tip on Twitter, checked it out, the sculptor's name is Jerry McKenna. Here is his portfolio.

EDIT: Sabres sent out an announcement earlier today about a presser tomorrow at the newly-named Alumni Plaza to announce plans for it. Starts at noon.

Sabres announce Alumni Plaza:
Quote:
The Buffalo Sabres will announce plans for an “Alumni Plaza” during a news conference at noon Thursday.

It has long been rumored the Sabres have had plans to erect statues of former players, including the French Connection and other players who have their numbers in the rafters at the First Niagara Center.

Sabres Vice President of Public and Community Relations Mike Gilbert said the team would have no comment until the news conference.
I could see Pegula commissioning the French Connection together (ie. celebrating) or apart as individuals; either's fine with me, as are ones for the other retired numbers.

This is awesome!

When Mr. Pegula took over and they had that box to list your suggestions to improve the team, arena etc. , mine was to erect a statue of the French Connection in the plaza.

Very cool to see they had the same idea as me.
