Phoenix Signs Nick Johnson

per capgeek.com

1 year 2-way deal worth $725,000

Seeing as he played in the All-Star Game Rookie Game, I thought he at least deserved his own thread. He had 8 goals and 26 points in 77 games with Minnesota last season.

Why was he let go by Minnesota?

Why'd he play in the young-stars game?

Johnson had a decent season for the waiver pickup he was. However, the Wild wanted that roster spot, knew he wouldn't take a 2-way, and decided the open contract spot was worth more to them with how much youth they have coming up through the system.

Was excited when the Yanks brought him back, but he proved injury prone as always

Former minor league teammate of Paul Bissonnette. Came up with that group that really seemed to benefit from Bylsma. I guess he will be useful for filling in on that 4th line RW spot when David Moss suffers his inevitable injury. If this is a one way signing, it probably rules out our bringing back Gilbert Brule, which bums me out. I feel like Brule was born to play in an anonymous small market with an incredibly structured coach like Tippett. I think we are overreacting a little bit to getting run over physically by the Kings. Everyone got run over by the Kings in the playoffs. Johnson certainly adds more size than Brule, but I feel like Brule would ultimately be the more effective of the two. At least for a team like Phoenix, who are starved for offense.

I guess that means Maloney won't get rid of Bissonette.

He was an injury replacement representative for the Wild after Mikko messed up his shoulder. The league threw the rookie a bone.

Seriously though, he's not that bad a player. Just didn't want a 2-way contract, and the Wild want to keep some options open for the youth movement.

Wish him the best of luck with the Yotes.

Alot of business reasons.

Johnson did very well the first half of the season, but slowed down after the All-Star game. Aftewards, with tons of young players coming in, having Johnson, a bottom six player, take up a roster spot when we want youngsters to challenge, didn't make sense for the Wild.

Johnson is a solid bottom six player, hardworking, plays simple. Not much to say about his game but he's just solid and eats his minutes. For a good price, he's a nice player to have on your 3rd-4th line.

Good pick-up by Phoenix. Johnson played difficult minutes for Minnesota last season - especially for a waiver wire player. He sort of fell-off during the second-half of the season, but he's a hard worker.

I wish him the best of luck with the Coyotes.

Decent 3rd/4th line guy and a good fit for the Yotes I think.

Damn Wild loses its last season's first line center. Luckily we got Parise and Suter to soften the blow.

The Wild are clearly above keeping these peasant sub-million dollar players...

Phoenix always seems to sign these types of guys...they are more of a quantity over quality team.

Yeah.

He was a BB machine, too bad he couldn't stay healthy. He would've been really good at Yankee Stadium.
