As bad as the players think Tuesdays NHL proposal was, some owners think they offered too much.

Russostrib 9:11am via Web The verb the #NHLPA is using before today's meeting w/ 18 players in attendance is not a good sign. They're going to "respond" to #NHL offer

TheFourthPeriod 8:59am via Web
Owners Jacobs (BOS), Leipold (MIN), Edwards (CGY) & Leonsis (WSH) are there, as well. They've been involved since CBA talks started.

NHLPA 8:51am via HootSuite
NHLPA responding to owners' latest proposal today. 18 Players here in TO incl.: Crosby, Iginla, Toews, E. Staal http://ply.rs/eA6Td

mirtle 2:58pm via UberSocial for BlackBerry Frankly, at first glance, all three PA offers are 50-50 for sure over time. Why ownership wouldn't negotiate off this, I don't know.

mirtle 2:37pm via UberSocial for BlackBerry Crosby says it feels owners treated their proposal as "take it or leave it." Added it seemed like their ideas were dismissed in 10 minutes.

From Adrian Dater:

Quote:
About the NHL lockout, I'm hearing...
...that there is a lot of backroom talking right now, and that we should see "something new" happen by early next week. I don't think anyone has an idea, though, which way things could break. Union is still adamant about that first year. The sides really aren't all that far apart, though. This shouldn't be all that hard to bridge. But that doesn't mean it'll happen. There are fragile egos on both sides and, as we've seen, they are fully capable of acting like little 2-year-olds when they don't get their way.
Meanwhile, life will go on with or without the NHL...

Nice article about Fehr's ascension to the NHLPA top job and how his confrontational approach to labour relations may represent a missed opportunity by the players, deleterious even to the final result.

Very interesing timeline for 2005.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/feature/story?page=nhlcba

No way this goes to February 16th before the season is cancelled, like last time.

MOD: for those asking, here's a remnant of ESPN's coverage of 2004-05 lockout with sidebar showing timeline/milestone dates.

TheFourthPeriod 3:17pm via Web You can kiss the 82-game schedule idea goodbye, folks. It's just not happening. I hope I'm proven wrong, but I doubt it.

TheFourthPeriod 3:19pm via Web That said, I'm still hearing through the grapevine we'll see NHL action this year... just more likely around the 60 game marker. We'll see.

Bill Daly says given NHLPA position on league's last proposal and "unwillingness" to offer a new one, he's unsure why 2 sides would meet.

Tim Panaccio ‏@tpanotchCSN

Daly: "back to drawing board."

Chris Johnston ‏@reporterchris The latest cancellations put new CBA "deadline" at Nov. 22 or 23. Deal would need to be done then for Dec. 1 start to the season.

Hearing that Hurricane Sandy (and the accompanying Nor'easter) have closed the NHL offices today.

(So, no negotiations or updates today)

Edit: or a couple of days. Sigh.
RenLavoieRDS NHL office in New York close today and maybe Tuesday #sandy
