Daly: "We withdrew our most recent proposal on Friday, and now we are spending time thinking
that the Union refused even to discuss our last proposal, it would appear that we still have a large gulf to bridge."

A source familiar with the league's plan told ESPNNewYork.com that the league is expected to cancel the Winter Classic on Thursday, the source said.

S.Fehr and B.Daly talked extensively on the phone on Tues about a variety of issues. Hopefully it leads to meaningful negotiating.

NHLPA conf call with the executive and negotiation committee on right now.

Jesse Spector ‏@jessespector 22m
Either a very long NHLPA conference call, or somebody decided to get lunch before leaking everything.

JoshuaCooper ‏@JoshuaCooper 10m
Was told conference call is still going on... Oh to be a fly on the wall

Bill Daly and Steve Fehr have tentatively agreed on resuming bargaining, however, they've yet to agree on the format, the location, the day
In other words, still very early in that discussion however looks like talks should resume at some point soon

I know some reporting Winter Classic won't be canceled today but I expect it will. Always allow for possible change of mind but I doubt it.

Darren Dreger‏@DarrenDreger
I don't share the optimism of some of my colleagues who see a 2 week delay in Winter Classic cancellation.

If the NHL and NHLPA do resume talks you'd have to think it would be in Toronto given the disaster that just hit NYC.

Don't know if this will make a dent or not

and quite frankly....whatever

The NHL made a somewhat surprising move this week to urge the NHLPA towards a deal and an end to the lockout.

The league amended a proposal made last month to shift the cost of the NHL designed 'make whole' provision from the players share over to the owners side.
...
The NHL proposal included a deferred payment system which the league is also willing to reconsider when negotiations resume.

Just to preserve the Daly/Fehr comments on Winter Classic cancellation

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=6...L%7CNHL%7Chome

Quote:
"The logistical demands for staging events of this magnitude made today's decision unavoidable. We simply are out of time," said NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. "We are extremely disappointed, for our fans and for all those affected, to have to cancel the Winter Classic and Hockeytown Winter Festival events."

"We look forward to bringing the next Winter Classic and the Hockeytown Winter Festival to Michigan," Daly added.

http://www.nhlpa.com/news/nhlpa-stat...ector-don-fehr

Quote:
“The NHL’s decision to cancel the 2013 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic is unnecessary and unfortunate, as was the owners’ implementation of the lockout itself. The fact that the season has not started is a result of a unilateral decision by the owners; the players have always been ready to play while continuing to negotiate in good faith. We look forward to the league's return to the bargaining table, so that the parties can find a way to end the lockout at the earliest possible date, and get the game back on the ice for the fans.”

I'm told Steve Fehr and Bill Daly still talking; less bargaining more about concepts. Good outcome would be more formal meetings to come.

"We had a series of meetings yesterday (Saturday) and exchanged views on the most important issues separating us," wrote Daly in an email to TSN on Sunday morning."We plan to meet again sometime early this week.''

The two had been talking by phone during the week.

People familiar with the nature of the talks but not authorized to speak publicly said progress had been made, but both sides declined to describe specifics of the sessions, which were attended by top executives of both sides as well as 13 players and several owners.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly confirmed that collective bargaining talks had ended at 7:15 p.m. Pacific time and would resume Wednesday. He added, "The league will not characterize the essence or the detail of the discussions until their conclusion." A spokesman for the NHLPA said the sides will meet again Wednesday at an undisclosed time.
