The Business of HockeyDiscuss the financial and business aspects of the NHL. Franchise sales, valuations, TV contracts, ratings, expansion, relocation, the CBA and work stoppage discussion goes here.
Because from the outside the whole thing seems flat-out weird.
As in: Isn't it weird that the owners and the players, who are more vested in the long-term health of the NHL than any other party by miles, just keep behaving like a couple of rats in a cold, wet bag?
They wrestle around trying to take chunks out of each other rather than focusing on how best to get out of the dark and into the light.
We talk about the minimum wage will increase at the same pace as during the last collective agreement. Players will increase the bonus series. Rules on the ballot will be modified. It is likely that there will be a period of "interview" for the unrestricted free meet teams before the date on which the players have their complete autonomy. This is the case in basketball and it is therefore expected that this is no longer the July 1st free agent market will open, but later in the month. The NHLPA has also made inquiries about the money they have put in trust or escrow the.
Its amazing how much hate Fehr generates. Its pro-rated.

There was much confusion into the night on this one, but the true story is the union was basing its revenue projections off a hypothetical full 2012-13 and not a hard-dollars share for this year. Indeed, the PA expects pay to be prorated for this season.
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
At Primetime Sports Management Trade Show in Toronto. Interesting quote from Steve Fehr: "One thing Bill Daly and I agree on...
When the moment is right...deal will be done very quickly."

Brian Burke, asked about fans: "The day people don't care about hockey, we're all out of work...Unfortunately, there are times they...
Have to wait for lawyers to sort it out." Difficult for Burke to be on this panel.
Had to leave conference early for @hnicradio, but you could see Burke was dying to spill his guts.
Katie Strang @KatieStrangESPN
#CBA As of 10 p.m., no contact between Bill Daly and Steve Fehr. And obviously, no plans on when (if?) two sides meet again
ChrisBottaNHL
asked Bill Daly tonight what NHL needs to meet with PA again. Daly: "We're done making proposals. We'll see what they want to do." @SBJSBD
Chris Botta @ChrisBottaNHL Source: if there isn't a deal in place in next 7days, NHL will cancel games thru Dec. 15. Next cancellation could be the season.
Know this: s. The long-term damage incurred by this league and industry can’t be undone, at this point. ...
And so at this point all that remains is salvaging what’s left of a chance to play hockey this season...
The NHL has informed the NHLPA that talks won’t resume unless/until the players have new ideas or a new proposal to reignite things. Owners don’t want to move an inch at this point. They’re furious that their $211 million "make-whole" offer was rebuffed so easily....
NHLPA executive director Don Fehr.... has done a "masterful" job so far in terms of managing this lockout, getting the league to move on key issues such as revenue sharing, and keeping his players on board through it all. He’s also frustrated the league to no end. But Fehr’s grading is far from complete. His most important test is coming. Unless I’m completely misreading the tea leaves, I can’t think of very many NHL players who are willing to sacrifice an entire season of hockey just so they can make a point to commissioner Gary Bettman.
..... if I’m an NHL player, I demand that Fehr over the next 2-3 weeks cut his losses and try to make the best deal possible from what’s left on the table. ........
And here’s where the read on Fehr gets widely different takes. On the one hand, there are people who believe Fehr has always shown an ability to feel the pulse of his membership and if it’s a deal they want, he’ll deliver one when the time is right.
But there are others who doubt his true intentions.
"I think he wants to rewrite labor negotiations; the game is not his priority," said one NHL team executive.
Molson Coors Brewing (TAP), the NHL’s official beer sponsor, says its sales in Canada are off by as much as 9 percent in the first four weeks of the current quarter compared with the same period a year earlier. Business is down 20 percent at Montreal’s La Station des Sports, where the bar, less than a mile from the Montreal Canadiens’ home ice at Bell Centre, is typically packed on hockey nights. “This hole can’t be filled,” says bar manager Terry Vasil. “Hockey is like religion here.”
Molson Coors Chief Executive Officer Peter Swinburn may seek financial compensation from the NHL for the games lost, he told the Canadian Press earlier this month.
