ChrisBottaNHL 9:42pm via Web Was never going to be a deal tonight (or Thursday). Still much to finalize. It's just good that they're negotiating.

TheFourthPeriod 9:45pm via Web
The 2 sides weren't going to MacGyver their way to a deal tonight. Still lots that needs to be done... They're still talking, that's good.

HarrisonMooney 9:41pm via TweetDeck
Pretty obvious the NHL and NHLPA are just killing time until the Canada/USA game.

drosennhl 10:08pm via Twitter for iPhone Fehr left open possibility to meet tomorrow. He did not say yes for sure or no for sure.

drosennhl 10:11pm via Twitter for iPhone
Bettman says the process will be continuing tomorrow morning. Mediator Scot Beckenbaugh asked them to get back together at 10 am.

drosennhl 10:12pm via Twitter for iPhone
Bettman: "As long as the process continues I am hopeful." He also says the word disclaimer has never been uttered by the NHLPA to the NHL.

drosennhl 10:13pm via Twitter for iPhone
Bettman says the mediator was present all day. He says it was a joint request by the parties. "Can't hurt," he says.

drosennhl 10:14pm via Twitter for iPhone
Bettman says the pension plan is a very complicated issue, "but that is something we understand is important to the players."

JSportsnet 10:14pm via Web
Difficult for either Fehr or Bettman to discuss specifics with Federal Mediator present. Discretion is key when they are involved.

reporterchris 10:15pm via UberSocial for BlackBerry
Gary Bettman says the sides had "philosophical discussions" about why certain issues are important to each side.

DarrenDreger 10:18pm via Twitter for BlackBerry®
PA did not file disclaimer but will in near future if a deal isn't reached.

TGfireandice 10:17pm via TweetDeck Bettman called pension plan "a very complicated issues" and said league hopes to satisfy players' needs on that.

RealKyper 10:19pm via Twitter for BlackBerry®
Told #NHLPA would need to re vote if they wanted to re visit declaimer.

JSportsnet 10:21pm via Web
Three straight days of Fehr and Bettman being pleasant, discreet and diplomatic. Might be record during lock-out.

From SXM HNIC Radio.

The sticking points in negotiations remaining are: 2013-14 cap ($60m vs $65m), pensions.

(There's one more IIRC, but it's impossible to take notes while driving )

found this pretty interesting.

http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/slapsh...Bvdi0wtRMC6yCM

Gary Bettman infuriated players across the table from him at NHL headquarters on Thursday — and, by extension, NHLPA membership — by claiming that a number of general managers had told him they regret some of the contracts they’d previously handed out and would welcome the opportunity to “dismantle” their teams in order to meet the steep drop to the league’s proposed $60 million cap for 2013-14, sources have told The Post.

The players responded with a mixture of anger and skepticism, demanding to know the identity of these alleged GM’s. Bettman refused to name the straw men in seeking to counter the players’ position that adopting a $60M cap — even with two amnesty buyouts — would be punitive against big-market, big-spending franchises

http://www.ottawasun.com/2013/01/04/...-phillips-says

I had heard about it, but now get some clarification. NHLPA lawyers found some (unintentional?) unmarked CBA changes in the HRR section, to wit, not allowing any verification of HRR $s.
Quote:
“Basically, they changed the definition, where there would be no accountability in terms of HRR (league revenue) accounting,” Senators team rep Chris Phillips said at noon Friday. “So they could basically give us whatever number they wanted to.

“It’s great that we’re at 50-50 now, but 50-50 of what? That’s just ridiculous. We’re trying to get a deal done, and negotiate in good faith and they pull garbage like that. That’s not going to get anything done.”

Chris Johnston ‏@reporterchris
While nothing is scheduled, there is still a chance the NHL and NHLPA meet tonight.

The players apparently have two conditions to be met for them to agree to 10 year CBA. First, opt out after year 7 (not 8). Second, minimum salary to be $800k by ninth year of CBA.
