I think it's an admission by the Leafs that the guy they hired is out to lunch. #firebelza

Dallas GM Joe Nieuwendyk hired his pal Gary Roberts to work for the Stars organization.

The Stars officially named Roberts as their Player Development Consultant on October 15, 2010.

I want him to stick this year, real bad. He's got all the tools. Unfortunately a numbers game last year / injuries didnt help, but thought he shoulda been on the roster for the most part.

I don't think your alone. I feel like he could provide a pretty damn solid addition to the top six. Hes got skill that could make our second line that much more talented.

Definitely.

Albeit he's not "strong", he's got a decent cycle game (but can provide offense off the rush too) because he likes to stop and start a lot, make give an go passes, thread the needle, etc.

From what we saw in his stint, he's much improved defensively too. Here's hoping he'll benefit from Roberts ala everyone else

JVR on his wing could pay some dividends IMO

Reminds me of this blog from a few seasons ago:

Quote:
On a hot, sweltering Toronto afternoon, I meet up with the Leafs 2009 top pick Nazem Kadri. This was the 2nd time I have met the young budding star and to say I was surprised is putting it mildly. The first time I met Nazem was September 2009, a scrawny young kid listed at 170lbs. I doubted he'd tip 165 in a wet suit when I first met him. This time around I was blown away. Maybe it was the heat, or maybe it was just the excitement of seeing this rising young star again at the beginning of his career. He had obviously started to fill out, and the results of all his hard work at the gym were more than evident. I bit my lip and thought to myself "Oh to be 19 again". What was once scrawny was now filled out and buff. Muscles rippled, pecs stood out, the face of the young lad had started to turn into that of a man. He sensed my shock when I saw him and greeted him.

He needs to stay healthy to help solidify his place. Getting injured last season did him no favours...

Per 60 minutes, Nazem Kadri draws 1.6 penalties, good for 16th in the NHL (I put a minimum of 20 GP as a filter). He is 0.6 penalties per 60 minutes ahead of the next closest Leaf (CMac) who draws 1 penalty per 60 minutes.

That alone makes him extremely valuable.

Nazem Kadri was also 2nd on the Leafs in "On-Ice Save %"

Kadri was 5th on the Leafs for "Corsi-On"

Kadri was 2nd on the Leafs for "Corsi-Relative" (behind Grabo)

Kadri was 2nd on the Leafs in +/-

But apparently, he's a defensive wreck.

What do you think the role of a strength and conditioning consultant is?

I think he improved each time he's come up. I don't remember for certain but what games was he called up for? Was he up in January during the really good stretch?

I think his biggest challenge is, the role he's best suited for, is the same role 3-4 other guys are suited for. Whether ir's 2nd line center or wing, he's 2-3 down the depth chart for the 2nd line position.

Given the right opportunity, I believe Naz could emerge as our 4th best offensive forward, behind Kessel, Lupul, and Grabo.

Lol, I think you missed the part where those stats were quite positive, and reasons why he should be playing in the NHL.

I think Naz and JVR both have that ability. But they gotta beat out someone for a chance to prove it.

I hope JVR is the next guy to work out with Roberts.. Roberts would make him a beast.

Me too. IMO he has 60 pt potential this year if he's given top 6 minutes. Not sure what that +/- will end up at but he can definitely produce offensively.

Personally I still don't like the way Kadri talks about himself, he sure is ...confident. But if he puts up this year and becomes a good piece for us to build with, I really couldn't care less - the attitude can change over time.

2nd, in my opinion. No one on our team has more talent except Kessel. Rielly should probably be in that conversation as well.

im a kadri fan and generally like this but i have a vague recollection that roberts ripped our strength/conditioning program under burke/wilson and fear this might not be a shrewd move for nazim

it doesnt matter how hard hes working this summer. unless some bodies start to move out in our forward ranks theres nowhere to put him. decisions have to be made about lombardi, Kulemin/mac and Tiny tim. As of right now, IMO frattin has his spot on this team, and maybe if frattin isnt ready by october kadri could slip in, but as it stands right now, theres a major logjam.

This, imo, is the make or break year for Naz. Burke needs to give this kid a shot, or let him go.

Kadri should be able to make the team as a 3rd liner too, and work his way up if the other spots are full. He's responsible enough.
