Heh. Vanek isn't terrible away from the puck, but we definitely drafted him for his offense.
His "14th place" finish in Selke voting in 2006-07 was pretty much the result of a few lazy writers throwing their votes to the guy who led the league in plus/minus.
On the other hand, I don't think he's ever really played with a true #1 center (pretty sure Briere, Drury, and Vanek all played on different lines when they were all in Buffalo), so his offensive totals probably underrate his talent.
An enforcer with 390 points in 1103 games will take some selling. 2792 PIMs will create a lot of power plays for the other team. GMs will use this against you. Speaking as a Hawks fan, good luck.
I dare say he won't be the only "psychopath" (and I say that affectionately, referring to his nickname) drafted in an effort to add "toughness" to a team. His warts are obvious, the benefits of having a player with his skillset is too, I think.
To be honest, I'm more concerned that GMs will use the fact that I'm not a "draft expert" against me. Not that it matters, this is all for fun.
Thus ends the ongoing TheDevilMadeMe/Dreakmur argument as to whether we should take him with our next pick. There is a lot to like with Janney (you can easily find it in the stats sheets for both regular season and playoffs), but a lot not to like
