Best.Name.Ever.

I'm surprised the Lord of the Rings didn't pick him up.

Zemgus is probably the best first name of any NHLer right now...probably because it starts with a Z.

Zemgoooooose.
This kid is no average 18-year-old. He's physically and mentally miles beyond the vast majority of prospects his age. Rolston is an established youth coach, and he did a great job last year with guys like Foligno and McNabb. It wouldn't have hurt him to spend a year at UVM, but if he, his prior coaches, and the Sabres and Amerks brass feel he's ready to go pro, well...That's a pretty solid consensus. Very excited to see how he does at training camp.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who came into this thread just to comment on the kid's name. I really hope he makes the NHL asap, I would watch Sabres games just to hear Rick call Zemgus.

I wish my parents were Latvian...

No, but that doesn't mean they need to try find the ceiling of his mental fortitude just yet either.

The only 18 year olds that belong in the NHL are ones that are exceptional in every area and clearly beyond junior hockey.
Girgensons does a number of things very well, but he's not beyond junior hockey yet.

Fair point, but everything about the guy says he's physically and mentally mature beyond his years. He's not a normal 18 year old, so he shouldn't be compared to a normal 18 year old.

Based on the reports out of Buffalo, along with recent statements made by Ruff, Regier, and Girgensons himself, the plan appears to be for him to start in the AHL and not the WHL. I really don't see anyway he starts in the WHL unless he really struggles during training camp. In my opinion, I think the odds of him starting the season with the Sabres are higher than him starting the season on a WHL team.

I don't believe this decision for Girgensons was ever between Vermont and WHL. It was between Vermont or the AHL/NHL, and I think his play during Prospects Camp made the decision a much easier one. Zemgus was unquestionably one of the biggest standouts this week and looked physically-ready to compete at the AHL level. His compete level, leadership qualities, and maturity were on display all week, as well as, a fair amount of skill. Also, the fact that the Sabres have a coach in Rochester, Ron Rolston, whose pedigree was in developing younger players in the USNDP, makes this a good fit for Girgensons.

Nothing to lose except rushing a guy and stunting his growth. Ask the Islanders how well that works out.

He's not the 'typical' 18 year-old, but he's still coming directly out of the USHL.

Best hockey name since the immortal Zarley Zalapski. But a strange signing nevertheless.

I want Girgensons and Grigorenko to play on the same line just to hear RJ call those two

Dream scenario: Grigorenko/Girgensons 2-on-1 against Gragnani.

Impossible. Gragnani would be the one who gets caught out of position and ends up trailing the play.

How is that a dream scenario? That would mean Girgensons and Grigorenko are (still) in the AHL 2 years from now, wouldn't it?

Uhhhh..

Is it just me or does this seem like it could really mess with his development?

You're combining the NHL and AHL into one. A player definitely wouldn't have to be clearly beyond junior hockey to make the jump to the AHL. Because of the agreement between the NHL and CHL we don't have enough examples to go by for how the AHL can help / hurt development, but i would assume that if the agreement didn't exist, probably the first couple rounds worth of CHL prospects would be playing and performing well in the AHL by 18. I just think of the Sabres drafting Armia last year and having the fact that he plays in a pro men's league being considered a huge plus for him. I just don't see a difference with Girgenson's playing in the AHL this year. CHL probably would be the best option for him, but unfortunately, he won't go to Kelowna.

From the prospect game and camp I would say he is far more ready then Grigs to make the NHL. So this makes sense, give him a little time in the AHL, then at first injury he is call up.

That's low. Zemgus is clearly a Gryffindor.
