From all reports that came out of Sabres development camp the kid is legit and clearly ready for, at minimum, the AHL. He is a solid 6'1 198 and apparently looked quite good.
Zemgus will start in the AHL/NHL but being sent down to Kelowna or whoever has his rights isn't out of the question. If he gets overwhelmed than yeah you send him down. Not the biggest deal if we burn a year off the ELC. Kelowna can still be an option for him as Buffalo has one of their scouts on the Rockets coaching staff. As far as who would be an option for trading for Zemgus, I would say whoever is hosting the Memorial Cup this year is most likely if Zemgus doesn't want to come to Kelowna.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who came into this thread just to comment on the kid's name. I really hope he makes the NHL asap, I would watch Sabres games just to hear Rick call Zemgus.
I wish my parents were Latvian...
Jeanneret is going to have a field day wit da Goose...
I hope he isn't called goose, that ship has sailed and was to recent. I would like to here Z again, or the Latvian Locomotive. ZZZZZZZZZZZ when he scores or something.
Voynov and Tatar have both gone the AHL route before 20 and it hasn't hindered their development. If the kids ready for pro let him play. If after 9 games in either the AHL or NHL he isn't ready then send him to the CHL. Very simple.

Well, those are different situations because both were playing in senior leagues.
Girgensons is coming from the USHL, a league that develops Division 1 or major junior players, not professional players.
Those players are finished and become legitimate professional players after they play in leagues above the USHL.
In the case of Tatar though, every time I see him play, I see a player that looks like he'll be a European league player.
He wasn't able to even make the Wings as an injury replacement this year after doing so the previous season, so I don't know how much he's really progressing.
As for Voynov, he didn't even want to be there.
The AHL is historically a terrible place for European players and a terrible place for 18 year olds.
There's also very little to reference when it comes to players going from junior A to minor pro, but that's probably because it's a dumb idea.
Considering how much he spurned Kelowna and kept re-affirming his commitment to UVM, I have to think that if he signed, he didn't do it to play in the WHL.
im curious if he is staying with the Sabres or going to the juniors in WHL or somewhere else.
It's going to be Buf or Roc. I don't think Girgs gives up on UVM unless he was guaranteed a spot on one of those clubs. His junior coach talked about his loyalty to the area where he spent 2 years (I think that was the time frame) playing already. In a phrase we know well I think the Sabres 'overpaid' to get him into the pros and out of college hockey.
Clearly, he impressed them during the development camp, yet I can't shake the fear that they are going to rush him and it will stunt his development.
Yep, I just see zero upside in this.
Put him in junior or don't sign him at all and let him go to UVM.
He'll probably be ready to make an impact at 19 and just needed some seasoning.
Trying this is dumb because it's just testing their luck.

He spurned Kelowna because they wanted him to leave Dubuque during the season.
I can't understand why no one seems to acknowledge that.
He was the captain of his team and wasn't going to walk out on them.
That doesn't mean he's necessarily opposed to going there now though, as I have not seen a single statement from him post-draft ruling out the possibility.

Ah okay.
Man the sabres have really changed up with this draft, Zemgus and Grigorenko in the future along with Hodgson might be something intense in the North East.
