Burke usually is cautious spending big bucks on older players however it is possible, Burke does like Doan and likes what he brings to the table and he has evidently pitched an offer to his agent, so stay tuned.

I do think however that the Islanders are the team that might make that kind of offer, at times Wang will decide and overrule his GM and make an extraordinary offer for a player, WPG could also be in on it but they are not really an Eastern team but who knows?

If that kind of money is out there Doan would have to really take a pay cut giving the Coyotes a home town discount and I would think he will be heading East.

Could be something along the lines of 12 million year one with 8 million signing and 4 salary. Then 8, 7, and 4 for a total 31 million.

The first year of the contract would have to include upfront money so that he gets it no matter what happens with the CBA.

Has to be the Islanders, they offered Komisarek 6.5 a year or something ridiculous. It has to be Garth

It is not my money, but I would love him to be a Leaf, if Burke pulls this off I would stay silent on Burke until the end of the season but Dion would still be fair game......because the fireworks would commence shortly after the start of the season....if not before.

While I agree it's an overpayment, it's not ridiculous. I'd be okay with Doan on the roster at $7.5M if it meant getting him on our team.

Would take Doan over anyone not named Kessel on our team.

With the recent bump in the salary cap, a lot of teams have a lot of free cap space with nothing to fill it with. Why not sign a guy like Doan?

In any event, you can't get a guy like Doan and expect him to play second fiddle to Dion.

I have to think this is a complete lie.

Not only because what team is stupid enough to do that (with a 35+ contract too...), but more-so because why the hell would Doan be stupid enough to have not signed already? He is nuts if he thinks anybody would top that offer.

Curious as to what the highest salary people here would offer Doan is. I'd say I'd go 5 million per season at the high end. There's nothing not to like about his game. Not sure about a 4 year deal either though.

Burke's main contention isn't with dollar figure, its with cap circumventing term. Theres nothing about this to suggest as much as Doan could easily be active at 39 years of age. If the the deal were front loaded to the point where he made say 1 million in the final 2 years, it would be a different matter.

I would take Doan at 7.5, but not over 4 years. Would need to be at max 2 years 15 million contract.

This just smells like the Rangers, Islanders, Flyers or the Hurricanes.

No large-name free agent will come to Toronto, so cross the Leafs immediately off.

So u guys would take Nash at 7.8Mper while giving up good assets and not take Doan at 7.5Mper while not giving up good assets? I would take this deal, we are gonna have alot of cap space in the near future and Doan is a beast he brings alot to the table something this team desperately lacks. Also if Doan signs here, it makes guys like MacArthur and Kulemin expendable in which they can be used to acquire that 1C we desperately need.

Kulemin + Connolly + Colborne + 1st for Getzlaf
MaCarthur + Lombardi + Scrivens for Backstrom
Sign Doan

Lupul - Getzlaf - Kessel
JVR - Grabovski - Doan
Kadri - Bozak - Frattin
Steckel - McClement - Brown
Komarov
Orr

Gardiner - Phaneuf
Gunnarsson - Komisarek
Liles - Franson
Holzer
Blacker

Backstrom
Reimer

They will go to the Island, however.

Since Doan isn't a center nor a goalie which Burke claims he's shopping for, and the only position Leafs have too many of already is wingers, then I don't see how this would apply to our Leafs anyways.

That's true also, but in his interview with McCowan and an interview on the leaf website, he said that there were guys out there but he didn't agree with the prices.

I cannot see this being a Burke type of signing.

Brian Burke likes to justify the contracts he hands out and frequently uses his "top players" as a benchmark as to what he's willing to pay his other players or free agents.

In this case, if he offered Doan this much money then he would be certainly telling Phil Kessel that in two years he'd be willing to spend at least $9million per season on Phil.

Not exactly the best cap managment and really doesn't seem like a Burke type of offer.

But I've been wrong before! ...But not many times!
