This seems like it has to be the Islanders.............a team trying to get to the cap floor. why not add a quality veteran like Shane Doan.

He would be a good addition to that team.

Islanders make sense from the perspective that he was offered that contract and has not accepted it, you would think any other team he would be riding the pony all the way to the bank.

Honestly, if we have the cap room, why not? The guy could make a huge difference in terms of leadership. Not sure how he'd get along with Phaneuf and our generally younger team though or what the appeal for Doan would be.

Honestly, I hope this is from Winnipeg. That would be cool to see him retire there.

Paying Doan $1 million a season more is hardly second fiddle.

My guess is it's a non playoff club. A contender doesn't have to overpay like that and he is way past his prime. And no, not TO because they need his game from 10 years ago, not the player he is today, and definitely not a 4 year deal.

Makes the most sense, they also just lost P.A. Parenteau to UFA. Replacing him and getting a quality player along with trying to reach the cap floor. Would also be great linemate for Tavares!

Would he sign on the Island?

In this case, if he offered Doan this much money then he would be certainly telling Phil Kessel that in two years he'd be willing to spend at least $9million per season on Phil.

Not exactly the best cap managment and really doesn't seem like a Burke type of offer.

But I've been wrong before! ...But not many times!
I think your on the money with the cap managment angle however having been spurnned by Luongo and Nash he may open the vault to sign Doan.

I do think though that Doan will not be a Leaf and he will be headed elsewhere.

Not even a chance this has anything to do with the Leafs.

Agreed. If true, this has a knee jerk reaction move from an East cup contender written all over it. Doan is a smart man. LA just won the cup with a roster full of Doans and Doan lites. I'm guessing that'll generate a tad bit of interest for those who came up short this year.

What about Boston? Would they do this? Horton is up in the air with his concussion problems and traded Poulieot, just wondering cause they took Kaberle and his crappy contract. They missed Horton's size and skill set last year. It smells like a Bruin thing to me.

I'm thinking Rangers, Philly or Pittsburgh. Maybe, just maybe Washington. Wouldn't put it past Ottawa either.

I was talking to a friend about the Boston situation the other day, just in general hockey chat, and I believe it was brought up that Boston has 23 players under their current roster, with about under $1million in cap.

So, no room really.

Don't teams have until a later date to be under the cap. I can see Boston trading for picks and Dman depth and signing Doan, just a gut thing........lol

I can't see it being the Islanders. Im going out on a string her and say its New Jersey. Its not us, Burke would have made an offer but has those stupid principles of his that ends up costing us good players lately. As the cap goes up, so does player values. Burke needs to change up.

I believe you can inflate to 110% of the cap during the off-season and you have to be back under by Opening Day.

like some have said, feels like a isles play or by a team that is really bad and knows they need to overpay to get him

Highly doubt this is Burke's doing. I hope not anyway. I would really like Doan on this team, but not at that price.

If you are a floor team, and a team that players dont want to go to (Islanders for example). Are you better to over pay a guy like doan at $7.5M per season then say Connolly at $4.75M? Im sure it could be easily argued that Doan is twice as valuable as Connolly for example.

Also, if the Cap is going to stay at $70M+ but the length of contracts are going to be cut to 5yrs, star players like Malkin will be getting max money, which is $14M per season, so in the new landscape of the NHL, maybe a 2nd line player like Doan is a $7.5M player.
