Could have retained Wellwood in San Jose for peanuts a long time ago. One of my favorites. Glad to see him getting paid though. Underrated stick handler and playmaker.

Miss you fatso.

$1.6M ... 1 year. And he said all the right things in his interviews yesterday. He came into camp out of shape because of his appendix (I think?) and Claude (whom he seemed to really like playing for) was able to work with him and get his ice up to a consistent 15 mins. This year he'll be coming into camp in shape and is hoping to show he can play 18+.

IMO, If he can do that and hit 25G & 30A (neither are big stretches from last year) and probably command $10M over 3 years somewhere. Hudler just got $16M for roughly the same numbers (and to an extent rep).

He still hasn't hit 30 years old. I think this is a great move for both him and WPG!

not if he hits 50+ again this year.

guys like peverley, kelly, vrbata, samuelson, foligno, bourque, zubrus, cleary, kopecky, mccarthur are all making right around $3M per. on muli-year deals. sadly it's not that big a deal anymore......

Good for Wellwood. Would've gladly had him back in Vancouver for a 1 year deal at that price.

1 year at $ 1.6 M sounds pretty fair to me. I like Wellwood I'm glad the Jets signed him, but how in the world is he worth 3 years at $ 3.33 M per? This a guy 1 year remove from making $ 700,000 on a 1 year contract and 2 years removed from not being able to find NHL employment and spending time in the KHL. He found a role as a versatile plug in guy on the Jets and was rewarded for it. He was on the open market for 2 weeks obviously no GM thought he was worth more than what he got.

Where he should be. I'd like to see Mittens and Machacek or Cormier fight for the 4th line. If Mittens can improve on his late-season play from last season, he'll make some excellent trade bait.

GAH that really sucks. I wish we could just get rid of him and give someone like Machacek or Cormier a shot.

Fat jokes aside, he is an underrated player and this is a good deal for the Jets. Magic Little Hands!

The funny thing is that he's a really small, light guy and pretty much the exact opposite of fat these days...

Which is precisely what he did last year when management asked him to waive it so he could be put on waivers. No one picked him up, though.

This contract is proof how much damage a reputation can do. Nick Foligno scored the same amount last season (playing more minutes (I think)) and it making almost twice as much. Though you could also say Foligno is getting paid for potential as well.

But how often do you see an almost 50-point bottom-6 player get no interest at all in FA?

Agree - just pointing out that it wouldn't be a one-sided decision to wave Mittens around as trade bait.

On topic: good signing, IMHO. Great term and very reasonable dollars. As a transplanted Winnipeger, it'll be interesting to watch the Leafs 2nd line from years back play together again.
