I would guess that it's a team that's not really in the running for the guy, figuring they might still be able to lure him by throwing a ridiculous amount of money his way.
If it was indeed Montreal that offered him the contract, it wouldn't surprise me that much. Doan ain't getting any younger, but when Bergevin was hired he had a 7.5M dead contract on his team, in his eyes if he buries that contract and ends up even (cap-wise), and has Doan in the line-up instead of Gomez, he's coming out on top.
Of course it's a ridiculous contract but I'm just trying to put it into perspective, Montreal would actually end up on top if Doan signed this contract, all things considered.
Any team would be idiotic offering that to Doan but Montreal might be one of the worst of the bunch. Even with Doan I question playoff possibility given who they have to beat out to get there. One would think after the contract disaster they endured, the new regime would be smarter. Hopefully, this all nonsense.
As I said on our board in the Doan thread, I don't believe it's the Isles for a second. Unless they just gained interest and reached out to him today, I don't buy it. They haven't been on the list of interested teams.
There have been 16 teams that have reached out to Doan; BUF, CAR, CHI, DET, LAK, MTL, NYR, PHI, PIT, SJS, STL, TBL, TOR, VAN, and WPG is the believed list. Counting Phoenix, that's 16. Fans of Eastern Conference teams on that list, if this is a true rumor, which it very likely could be considering how many teams have money to spend, there's a 1/9 chance it could be your team.

I don't understand why Montreal is being mentioned here, there is no logical reason why they would offer this - none.
This didn't happen, otherwise Doan would have put pen to paper by now.
He's no mercenary, but he'd have to be crazy to pass on a deal like that.
Not if he's taking his family into consideration. At this point in his career it will be more of personal and family preference than money. Also, if he'd like to win a Cup.
Would you make that big of a life decision that isn't only a major significance in your life but in the lives of five others that quickly? Doan and his family have been in Phoenix for A LONG TIME. It's his and his family's home.

Except he may still want to stay in Phoenix. So even if the deal was offered, he may not accept it until he finds out the result of the Coyotes situation.
Also, I believe Eklund on him saying the Flyers AREN'T the rumored team. Ek is usually always on top of Flyers stuff, for whatever reason. He broke the M. Richards trade, afterall. If you're looking for a team for Eklund to actually spew correct information about, it's the Flyers.

I would prefer $5 to $5.5 million from Vancouver, LA, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Philly and a few other teams. While the contract is disgustingly good. This is likely Doan's last opportunity to win a Stanley Cup and honestly, what chances does Phoenix have of a repeat performance like this past season? You can always make money, even if only through good investment. Cup chances have an expiration date.
