ESPN The Season: Colorado Avalanche 2003-04

Hey guys. I just uploaded the full documentary of ESPN's "The Season: Colorado Avalanche". It wasn't on YouTube before (only the first part afaik). I know a lot of people haven#t seen it yet, so here's the video. Enjoy.

I can't force myself to watch this, that season was a massive disappointment.

I know... it's like a documentary of how the Avs totally underwhelmed the entire league and came up short.

Just goes to show you that have a star-studded lineup doesn't exactly mean winning the Cup.

Kariya plagued with injuries and Selanne could not score goals to save his life, yet, always scores against the Avs TO THIS DAY.

BAH!!!!

zech: thanks for the upload anyways

Ah is that the full thing? I never got to see part 2. This was before the days of DSL internet and youtube and torrents.

I do remember seeing them chirping Kariya's choice of clothing lol

I'm pretty sure this is the season that the hockey gods officially turned their backs on the Avalanche. It was like adding Kariya and Selanne was the final straw and they decided to curse the franchise.

Selanne was a broken man that would need the lockout to recover, Kariya was hurt all season, Foppa was hurt, Morris was not the same aggressive player he was after having his orbital bone broken the year prior and the team invested way too much into finding "protection" for their star players.

Total disaster season.

I remember the day the Avs announced the signings too... it was like a dream come true. Anything less than a SC Finals appearance was total failure.

I'm not sure part 2 was ever produced. I believe it would have included the Bertuzzi hit on Moore, who was mic'd that night in Vancouver for the show.

Ooh, thanks. I've heard about this show but never seen it. I daresay it will make for painful viewing though.

It's like watching an all-star team score 0 goals in a game.

I wish they had kept that KGB line together. So much fun to watch.

Lacroix did a good job with his forward additions throughout the season, but he severely decimated the defensive skill on the team. Wish they could've added to the skill instead of just gone for brute strength and size back there.

Not the worst for me, but it's up there. Worst for me is the Statue of Liberty by Roy in the '02 WCF game 6. Forsberg was Conn Smythe for sure that year and we never recovered after that play.

Anyone remember the Tanguay-Reinprecht-Niemenen line from the '01 playoffs? I thought they were gonna be something special, they were all young at the time but left one by one.

I remember after game 60 or so the Avs were in first place in the entire league

and all I could think about was a third Cup

That was such a bad Avs moment... it was one of those things where you wish you hadn't just seen what you saw. So unlike Roy to muck that up, and you're right... the momentum swing afterwards was huge. All signs were pointing towards a repeat until that moment.

Nimo was awesome, and I was surprised the Avs didn't hang on to him. Sacco would've loved him lol

Part 2 was produced. I have it on vhs.

Too bad they never made a dvd out of the footage, there mustve been hundreds of bonus footage they couldve included.

Probably wouldve if they had of made it to the cup finals.

It's hard to admit this (to myself, let alone others) but I sort of resent Roy for this play. I know we'd never have made it where we did without him and he was a visionary/pioneer for goaltending, but if he'd just kept his #$%&ing glove on the ice! Things could be so much different. Forsberg will always be my one and only true man-crush (considering a 21 tattoo) and I hold Roy directly responsible for our exit that year. So much was riding on that series...Forsberg's Conn Smythe, repeat SC, not to mention we'd have been 4-1 vs. Detroit in the playoffs to that point and Cups would have been 3-3 not 4-2 in the rivalry era. Gotta stop. Getting pissed. I HATE Detroit!

If only. However, it was Roy's expired $7M salary that allowed them to go out and get Kariya ($1.2M - since he made under the league average of ~$1.25M, he could be a UFA after the year) and Selanne ($5.8M). What a disappointment that season was.

Great post, I was still kinda young when this went happened, but I'll never forget where I was when I heard we signed those two. That was like my JFK moment. Hopefully we can hold such a high standard towards this team again soon.

What's more disappointing for you guys, 2001-2002 or 2003-2004?

For me it would be the former. Yes, 03/04 had a lot of media hype, but I hate losing to the Wings like that, especially knowing we could have taken Carolina.

EDIT: Never mind, I see it's already been mentioned lol
