UFC Fan Expo

I got a chance to check this out when I was in Vegas. Very cool experience. I know they only have them every year or so, but I would definitely recommend checking it out if you get the opportunity. We had two-day passes but only went on the Friday (I heard Saturday was MUCH busier). Friday wasn't too bad.

We got there just after 10am (that's when it started), and unfortunately rather than immediately getting in one of the lines we took a quick tour of the place. Well in the time it took to do that the lines had doubled in length. We ended up having the opportunity to meet Mir and Carwin (both were very cool), but we easily could've gotten a third in had we immediately gotten in a line. The lines for Carwin and Mir each took about an hour and a half. I was really impressed with the number of fighters in attendance. JDS, Cain, Jones, GSP, Rashad, Hendo, Wanderlei, Penn, Cruz, Condit, Overeem, Cormier, Liddell, Couture, as well as dozens of others.

It was really cool to see all of these guys in person. Even if you didn't get to directly meet them, you could walk within a couple of feet of where they were, so you still got a good idea of how big they were and what they looked like and what not. Both Mir and Carwin, while definitely big guys, weren't quite as big as I was expecting. But on the flip side, Cerrone was much bigger than I would've expected, along with many of the 155 and under guys. Cruz was also considerably bigger than I would've thought. In addition to basically every fighter you could imagine there are also countless beautiful women walking around promoting various products and passing stuff out.

I'm about 6'0" 200 pounds for reference.

cool pics. hmmm ...you look just as big/bigger than Carwin/Mir. Both of those guys are supposed to have 50 lbs on you...

Funny eh. With so many weight classes it probably sets people up to have a false concepts of size differences. On the street there are big guys, average guys, and small guys. Only in competitive fighting, do we see this micro analysis of size. Anyway. just my 0.02

Yeah its odd meeting guys in person. I've said before on here that Sonnen is huge in person, he made me feel like a little kid next to him and I'm 6'2 205. Mark Munoz is in his weight class but was much smaller.

The other surprising guy to me was how small Paul Daley was.

Sounds like a cool/fun experience. I wouldn't be real keen on waiting in line that long to meet someone but if you're there and have time to kill then you might as well. What made you pick Carwin and Mir as the guys to meet?

I would've rather met guys like JDS, Cain, Jones, GSP, Hendo, Wanderlei, Penn, Overreem, Liddell and Couture myself but to each their own.

Were you able to talk to some of the fighters who were just walking around or did you have to get in line to meet them?

I'm sure those lines were much longer than Carwin or Mir's. I met JDS and I was in line forever.

I've always wanted to go to the expo, hopefully I'll get a chance down the road. Every time there's an event though there are several fighters hanging around doing autograph, and they all seem to be cool guys. The UFC is great with their fans.

In Toronto I got to meet Mitrione, Wanderlei, Hardy, Soszynski, Makdessi, Jabouin, Shields and Brookins. Soszynski comes across as a real good dude, met him at a bar after he suffered a knockout loss to Pokrajac and he was smiling, conversing and taking pictures with everyone. Dan Hardy's size surprised me the most, doesn't look like he could make 170.

Was going to meet Rory MacDonald too, but the bouncer apparently didn't like my ID.

I'm a bigger fan of the heavier weight classes, so initially those were the guys I was looking for. What sucked was there was a line where you got to meet Jim Miller, Rothwell, and Cain, and it wasn't overly long when we first got there, but once we realized we should get in one it was just way too long. I'm pretty sure Jones was there the day after I was, and I know Hendo was. Definitely would've liked to have met Overeem, but that was either late in the day Friday, or also on Saturday. The JDS line was right next to Mir's, and it was 2-3 times as long. Mir and Carwin were two guys pretty high on my list whose lines weren't ridiculous, so that's pretty much why I went with those two. I know the GSP line was crazy long.

One thing I forgot to mention, they do a great job with the lines of cutting them off at the back, meaning if you're in line when they cut it off, you're guaranteed to meet said fighter. Some of those lines get real long, and most fighters are only slotted from say 10-12, or 2-4 or whatever, so it's nice to know that as long as you get in line before they cut it off you're gonna meet whoever you're waiting for.

Other than the Miller/Rothwell/Cain booth, all were either two fighters or one. Typically they'd pair up a bigger name with a smaller one, or two medium names. Forget who JDS was with, but Carwin was with Benavidez, Mir was with Ellenberger, and Cerrone was with Serra.

I did see Barry walking around chatting with some people. Seemed very friendly as he always does. I'm sure he had a booth later in the day but I'm not exactly sure when. Other than that I really didn't see fighters walking around. I've heard of it happening before so I'm sure it does, but my guess is it's more when the fighter's on his way somewhere. I don't think too many of them walk around the Expo leisurely (at least it didn't seem that way). Arianny was there when we were, and she definitely didn't disappoint in person. I think Brittany was also there but that might've been Saturday.

Ok, cool. Thanks for the info. I kind of figured guys like JDS, GSP, Liddell, Couture and Jones would have longer lines than Carwin or Mir. I can't really blame the fighters for not walking around leisurely as they would likely get swarmed by fans. Cool that 'HD' was walking around though, he seems like one of the nicest guys in the UFC.

So did you get to meet Benevidez, Ellenberger and Serra too or did each guy have his own line at the booth?

Sorry for all the questions.

I actually wasn't in line to meet Cerrone/Serra, it was just right next to the Carwin line so I got a good look at him. Some of the lines were solo; Cormier, GSP, Hendo, etc., but a lot of the lines were doubles, meaning you get to meet both fighters. So I got to meet Carwin and Benavidez, as well as Mir and Ellenberger. They don't seem to pair up two really big names, but if you happen to find a line with two fighters you like then that works out really well.

Lol, that's why I did the pose like that. I knew he had absolutely enormous hands/fists, so I wanted to get mine in the pic for reference. Thing's like a friggin' cinder block.

I met an inebriated Big Nog and what appeared to be a somewhat high Faber among others after UFC 126 in the Mandalay Bay casino. The elevators to the rooms from the casino in the hotel where the fight takes place is a great location to run into fighters. Met at least a dozen in a couple hours. Mike Goldberg was a great guy too, chatted with him for 5-10 min about the Canucks. Ran into Pat Barry and Mark Munoz near the parkade before the fights and both those guys were really awesome. Definitely two of the most likeable fighters out there.

Right on, that'd be cool to meet Ellenberger and Benavidez too. Joey B must've looked like a dwarf standing next to Carwin.
