Cap Dump Trades

Reading the Gomez thread....got me thinking
Name a freakin cap dump trade that has happened. In this context, I mean, a trade that was a cap dump even if the team was not reaching or dangerously close to the cap ceiling.

Everyone loves to say `negative value so you have to add just so we take him`or some such but at no point has that sort of trade ever transpired. This is a made up perception by HF posters.

Gomez to Montreal was not a cap dump as a valuable asset went to the Rags
The Heatley, Pronger and Thornton trades weren't cap dumps

Outside of Campbell (who got a Lady Byng nod and plays well in Florida) I can't think of a single other guy off the top of my head that was a cap dump

Seems as though that if a team can afford to have a guy on roster and can somewhat produce, he will stay in the club otherwise get sent down to the AHL a la Redden and Souray

Nice find, didn't think of it and had to go check out who the first round pick turned out to be
Sharks and Blues swapped those two first rounders with each other
Sharks picked Couture
Blues picked Perron

I understand some of the history but it seems a bit far fetched for a late round pick

Kotalik last year to Buffalo. I mean, part of that was a real trade (Regehr for Butler + eh prospect), but Buffalo essentially got a 2nd for taking Kotalik's contract.

It rarely happens. Malakov comes to mind but it's pretty rare to see in the NHL.

Rolston for Hunter

Islanders needed the salary and Devils went with a cheaper option to buy out

Kolzig and Heward to Toronto.
Petiot was included for Rogers, but a 4th was added going to Toronto in order for them to take Ollie and Heward.

Well its not why it happened but the result of ryan smyth to edmonton result in la gaining alot of cap space that they spent on gagne and carter which led to them winning the cup If smyth didnt demand his trade to edmonton la proberly doesnt win the cup.

Brian Campbell to Florida. I do think that Campbell is a quality player, but not at the price tag that he has.

Bryan McCabe went to Florida with a pick for Mike VanRyn. McCabe was the better defensman, but the pick was added to his side because of the bigger salary, and the desire from the Toronto media/fans to have him moved.

Dallas had to do the reverse and gain salary cap. We received Nystrom for future considerations.

Most cap dumps are part of bigger trades I believe.

I think that this the best example. It follows the model : "We'll take player X for free if you give us a pick".

Ehrhoff and Campbell weren't real camp dump since they had value for the teams that acquired them. They weren't traded because they were bad. They were traded because their former team needed some cap space.
