Some teams need to add more salary as well.

On July 12, 2006, Samsonov signed with the Montreal Canadiens for a two-year contract worth $7.05 million. Through a lackluster season, the Canadiens placed Samsonov on waivers in February 2007,[1] and traded him to the Chicago Blackhawks for Jassen Cullimore and Tony Salmelainen in June 2007.
No one wanted Samsonov on waiver.

But Chicago was willing to trade Cullimore and Salmelainen for him instead of claiming him on waiver.

clearly all players involved had a negative value, Cullimore and Salmelainen contract was bought out by Montreal.

Certainly looks like it

Him and Hatcher are the first two guys that I always think of in regards to being the victims of the new rule changes that opened the ice up but holy crud did Gauthier go all out in that final season. Suspended twice, once for boarding and once for a head shot

Didn't Chicago do a load of cap dumps after the cup?

andy mcdonald for doug weight. Not a "cap dump(they made the same amount)" at the time but burkey traded a talented #2c signed past the season for a #3-4C at the time that became a free agent in the offseason, WHUTTT?

That was to make cap space for Teemu to come back.

Jose Theodore for David Aebischer is your classic case of a salary dump.

You could probably call the Zbynek Michalek trade a pretty clear case of cap dumping too. He basically was moved for a 3rd round pick, an ECHL goalie, and a marginal-at-best prospect. That's a pretty low return for a player of his quality and it's pretty clear he was just a cap dump to let the Pens go after Suter/Parise.
