Does Steve Mason have any value?

Many Columbus fans want nothing to do with the kid, not even in a backup/AHL role. However, I have seen around the site various people saying that they may want him as a reclamation project in the hopes of returning him to form. At the same time, I have seen him described as having negative value, due to his 2.9 million dollar cap hit and horrible performances in recent seasons. I am interested in seeing what more people have to say about how much Mason is worth.

If they had traded him after the 08-09 season, then he would have had a lot. But now ... Not much. Too much weight on his shoulders with a shyte team.

Maybe a late draft pick (6th or 7th) from a team that suffers injuries to one of their top-2 and doesn't have a NHL-ready call-up waiting in the NHL.

But his value is essentially zero I'd suspect.

Borderline negative value. Only teams that should be interested are teams that have plenty of cap space and play great defensive systems.

None.

Maybe on re-entry waivers where CBJ is responsible for half of his salary.

Luongo for Mason.

To be true.. That wouldn't actually be the trade I would want back for Luongo but I wouldn't mind him being in the package for Luongo.

Are there any teams needing to get to the cap floor with a need for a 1b/backup?

I think he has talent, just needs a coach to help his game and a new start.

half of his albatross of a 2.9 million dollar deal? If he has no value, it has nothing to do with his contract.

I still think a 24 year old goalie who has shown the flashes he has still has some value but only to a team with a weak starter who may want to look into him splitting time.

That sucks too. Cause had he been given the proper time to develop, behind a solid veteran and on a team that didn't sit near the bottom, then I think he would have been a starter somewhere. They just mishandled him.

I'd say his value is worse than Pascal LeClaire.

Given the current market for goalies and his most recent performances, I would anticipate any return for Mason being structured around conditional assets.

Likely a pick set a couple years down the road based on GP?

I think a solid fit would be in phoenix . Sean Burke did wonders with Mike Smith and mason could go there quietly and re-gain his form and career. I think he is an upgrade over labarbera and maybe a labarbera for mason trade ?

I could see a team wanting him next offseason when his 2.9mil price tag is gone and he can essentially be sent to the farm to work on reclaiming his career. But as of now? The best you might get is a 1 for 1 with another team's struggling player.

Explain. The duo in STL won the Jennings Trophy last year and are both signed for 2 the next years.

CBJ fans are adamant that it's all Mason's fault for playing so badly.

Is Mason for sure done in Columbus or is he going to get one more shot this season? Only ask because although Bobrovsky is thought fairly highly of, their stats last year were not that different and Mason of course had to backstop a far more terrible team (albeit Curtis Sanford significantly outperformed Mason behind the same team).

Steve Mason: 1988 born, 45 GS, 3.39 GAA, 0.894 SV%
Sergei Bobrovsky: 1988 born, 25 GS, 3.02 GAA, 0.899 S%

I guess I'm asking...is Bobrovsky really a lock for the job at this point?

Agreed. Phoenix would be a great fit for Mason to recover his game.

He should get the starter spot for the beginning of the season. But like you said, it's a far worse team then he is use too, and I won't be surprised if it's another Steve Mason story all over again. CBJ might be the new place where young goalies go to die.

Bobs still needs some work, (especially with his pads) and that's why they didn't stick with him and grabbed Bryz. Neither of them should be starting anywhere.

Now, think for a second, Hitchcock pretty much made Mason. Now, who coaches the blues man. Its a joke
