When we last left Ladislav Scurko, the Slovak player who was charged with murdering a referee in 2008, he had just been released with a new trial pending and was playing again, this time with HK Slovan Gelnica and later HK Trebisov in Slovakia.

On Monday, Scurko was convicted of murder and sentenced to eight years, the minimum for such an offense. The prosecution was looking for at least 15 years.

The incident was a few years ago but the verdict is new information.

Not sure his style translates well to the NHL... tough to bury the body out on the ice.

Wow did not know this. How bad was the call against Scurkill by the ref?

If he tried to stab the ref with his skate during a game I would say he's Flyers material. Off the ice killings, I'll have to say he still ranks above some of the players we drafted that year.

Funny thing, in Swedish "skurk" means felon, criminal etc.

I think this needs a little more context. Where did he kill him, why and how?

In the article, but here's the cliff notes.

1.) Unrelated to hockey
2.) Victim claimed to have an illness and asked to stay at Scurko's house
3.) After some time, Scurko begins to suspect ref victim isn't sick
4.) Repeatedly asks him to leave
5.) Finally, in an argument, Scurko stabs ref and buries body in shallow grave
6.) Body found months later
7.) Scurko confesses, then later recants
8.) Scurko thought to have mental defect that wasa mitigating circumstance in the crime.
9.) Got 8 years (minimum) because of the underlying mental issues at time of the manslaughter

The system there is obviously not as harsh as here..especially in Texas.

Maybe not appropriate but during the Pitt series and Devils series in particular I sure wanted to ScurKILL some officials for hockey reasons...actually Shanascam got most of my ire...still can't believe the Neal suspension.

If this happened to a Penguin, Bettman would be in the courtroom pushing for 2 years max.
