Quick question, all the Modano talk on nhl.com I was thinking why he never was Captain for an extended period, did something happen or did they just want Hatcher and Morrow more?
The team was trying to shake up what was referred to as a Highland Park country club atmosphere. It was a silly gesture to change the letter but keep all of the same personalities in the room, and it ended up making no difference.

I find it amusing that you harp on the letters meaning nothing and that it's something more for the fans than anything tangible in the room yet teams change captains fairly frequently. Clearly NHL organizations feel differently about what it means to be a captain in this league.
Kind of funny how the team started getting better results in the postseason almost immediately after changing captains.

Teams change captains regularly because players move around a lot. Sometimes coaches will change captains out of desperation to try to stoke change, make noise, and keep their job. I can't think of a time when changing captains mid-seasons resulted in any meaningful change on the ice.

They did? Immediately after changing captains, they went from division winner to third in the division and got bounced in the first round just like they did both seasons with Modano as captain.
With Morrow as captain, they have never finished higher than third in the division, missed the playoffs four times, got bounded in the first round once, and had one long playoff run.

I would have to agree with this, Modano cant take anything seriously his twitter pretty much revealed that, lol hull could be worse, but they are hanging out at country clubs and Morrow is with them and I'm sure if Morrow did do anything to change Modano's thing they wouldn't be chillen maybe
The cognitive dissonance he displays is amazing. "I know I wasn't the best role model or put in 100%, I admit that. But I should have been given another year."
At development camp, I asked a Stars staffer about Modano's role with the organization this coming year. The dude ducked the question a bit, specifically citing Modano's involvement with the Allen Americans.

It was the right time when it happened, just like now is the right time with Morrow/Robidas imo. Honestly don't get how someone could ask for a better exit than he received not only in his last game in Dallas but in his last game as a Star in Minnesota. It was set up perfectly.

Sure the end result was the same, but the team actually played better in the playoffs that year than the previous two.

Pretty much. They went from getting beaten behind the shed in the playoffs to legitimately competing; they made it to the WCF. I'm not sure what regular season finishes have to do with th discussion when it was playoff failures that made a change seem necessary.
Troy, who said anything about mid-season captain change? IIRC Morrow was named captain in the summer of 2006.
I guess I'm just surprised that the argument in favor of the importance of the captainy is to point to a team that was no better and was likely worse immediately after the change.

"I don't know," he said. "You look at things and you wonder, 'What's the worst thing that could happen?' I mean, I get in better shape. I don't know what's going to happen with the CBA and everything, but I mean, one more year? That kind of intrigues me."
