Week of July 16th-22nd - Sunday Papers

Sunday, July 22nd Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: Byfuglien boating trial to start Monday. Looks like the Sun is sending a couple of reporters down to cover the case. If ever you wondered what hockey coverage in Canada was like this sums it up.

CBA news:

CSN Chicago: Blackhawks ‘hopeful’ for new CBA. The talk was of war chests early on as both sides have allegedly amassed significant fortunes to see them through tough times but their is still positivity early in the process.

CBC: NHL labour dispute – A player’s perspective. A 10-year pro who has played in the NHL, the AHL and overseas. These are his thoughts on the current labour situation.

NHL news:

Philadelphia Inquirer: Holmgren waits to see if high-risk move on Weber brings reward. Some good insight into the why the Flyers made the offer.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins still in Shane Doan mix. If you are Doan and want to compete for the Cup, then you have to seriously look at the Pens.

The Province: Deals get done as hearings loom. Only 7 remain of the original 16 who filed for arbitration.

Monday Papers

Monday, July 16th Jets, IceCaps and General NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: Prospect signs with KHL. A shame in the sense that Kulda added a good amount of defensive depth for the Jets. Remember they used 13 different defencemen last season, so depth on the blue line is never a bad thing.

Affiliate news – St. John’s IceCaps:

The Telegram: Resetting the defence. Lots of different looks for this position next season. One thing that is certain, is with the departure of Kulda and expectations that Postma will be with the big club, there is plenty of opportunity for someone to become the face of this defensive core.

NHL news:

Montreal Gazette: Don’t expect NHL hockey this fall. In the cup half empty category

CBS Sports: Las Vegas could soon have an NHL-ready arena. Could make my annual pilgrimage to Vegas a lot more interesting.

ESPN: No surprises in NHL’s first offer. It was the opening salvo in contract negotiations. Nobody should be surprised that the NHLPA isn’t ready to agree to the demands being made by the NHL.

CSN Washingtion: Green declines Caps’ $5 million offer. Will we see a rebound season from the former first team all-star?

Illegal Curve Hockey Show replay:

Part 1: The Winnipeg Jets agree to contracts with Kyle Wellwood and Paul Postma. Winnipeg Jets talk continued. Interview with Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News. Teemu Selanne returns for one more season with the Anaheim Ducks.

Part 2: CBA discussion – Owners make proposal to NHLPA. CBA discussion continued. Interview with Adam Proteau of The Hockey News. Rapid Fire, Cheers & Jeers.

Tuesday Papers

Tuesday, July 17th Jets and General NHL news

Jets news:

Note: Jets announce new player numbers:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets, Kane working on lengthy deal. Guess this puts to rest any notion that Winnipeg cannot sign its young stars to long term deals. Here is what Richard had to say about establishing Kane’s market value back in January.

Winnipeg Free Press: Playing with the big boys. The Jets are committed to a bigger team, which doesn’t always translate to success. Shall be interesting to see if this model can be successful.

Winnipeg Free Press: Pavelec convicted of DUI. Ed with some interesting tidbits, including that the driving ban was limited to the Czech Republic. As well, the legal amount of alcohol in your system while driving in the Czech Republic is zero.

Winnipeg Sun: Pavelec gets DUI according to Czech media. Paul suggests that feet should be held to the fire when it comes to conduct off the ice. While the expectations of being choir boys is unlikely, smart choices should be somewhat expected when your health nets you millions of dollars per year in salary.

Official Jets Statement regarding the DUI from GM Cheveldayoff:

“At this time True North Sports & Entertainment and the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club are aware of various, yet still inconsistent, internet reports pertaining to Ondrej Pavelec. We, as an organization, are attempting to gather more information and until such time as we are comfortable and have a full understanding of the situation, we will not be issuing any further comment.”

Jets Official Site: 2012 Development Camp recap (video). Exclusive in depth look at the 2012 Winnipeg Jets development camp. An interesting look at camp life.

NHL news:

Globe and Mail: Labour woes raise prospect of a broadcasting vacuum this fall. Time to create Illegal Curve TV? At least it would be something to watch.

Delaware County Times: Blame GMs if NHL lands in lockout. When you have purse strings that big, sometimes it is difficult to say no to a deal, even when you should know better.

Sportingnews.com: Long Island’s arena reluctance could lead to Brooklyn Islanders. The purists will hate any move (understandably so) but would a move within New York State be better than the alternative?

Arizona Republic: Glendale rejects petitions in referendum of Phoenix Coyotes deal. Not surprising that they rejected the petitions. Firstly, they had a deadline and even had they met it, they failed to acquire the amount of signatures necessary to be on the ballot.

Wednesday Papers

Wednesday, July 18th Jets and General NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Pavs sorry, Jets aren’t thrilled either. Rightly so as it appears everyone was caught with their pants around their ankles on this one.

Jets Statement:

“The Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club would like to state we have now confirmed the details surrounding Ondrej Pavelec while driving under the influence in Kladno, Czech Republic, on May 26, 2012. The organization was deeply disappointed to learn of this information yesterday and is fully aware of the seriousness of this matter. We will determine our course of action once we have the chance to meet and discuss with Ondrej in person, which we expect to do at the earliest possible opportunity.”

Winnipeg Sun: Pavelec is sorry. But is he sorry for getting caught or truly sorry for his actions? While you cannot castigate someone for one mistake for the rest of their life, it would be beneficial for Pavelec if he could use his celebrity to shed some light on the issue of drinking and driving in the future. Perhaps some good can come from this after all.

Pavelec Statement:

“I’m disappointed in myself for this error in judgment. I’m thankful no one was injured as a result of my actions. I want to sincerely apologize to our fans, the Winnipeg Jets organization and to my teammates for any embarrassment this has caused. I’m truly sorry for letting you all down.”

The Manitoban: Bison hockey continues to evolve. From using Bison goalie Joe Caligiuri in a practice last season to inviting a prospect to the development camp, the Jets 2.0 are maintaining a relationship with the Bisons that they had when the Moose were in-town.

CBA news:

New York Post: NHL’s proposal a joke. Commish Bettman and company have been down this road before and know a thing or two about how to achieve their goals.

Globe and Mail: Ownership, union philosophies far apart. While these are the dog days of summer, there isn’t as much time as one might think to try and bridge the gap between the two sides.

Ottawa Citizen: What fans should hope for in the NHL’s new CBA. Some items to look for as the CBA talk gets going.

NHL news:

CBC: Zach Parise 'ran the show' + 30 Thoughts. Final 30 thoughts for the season and Elliotte Friedman doesn't disappoint, including an extra bonus 14 thoughts.

MLive: Red Wings made big pitch for Rick Nash, but Columbus not willing to deal with Detroit. Don’t expect Nash to be wearing a Winged Wheel anytime soon.

The Province: Canucks in tough to land Shane Doan despite multi-year offer. A good read on Doan’s intention to possibly play for Vancouver, made even better by the Simpson reference in the article.

ESPN: Axelsson eyes return to NHL. Seems to be the return of the aging former NHL players this season.

Thursday Papers

Thursday, July 19th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Punish Pavs, MADD says. I suspect next season Pavelec will be more likely seen shooting a commercial for MADD than he will selling cars for the local car dealers.

Winnipeg Sun: Pavelec’s agenst should have been up front about DUI. Without knowing who knew what when it is hard to talk in absolutes, but one would have to suspect that Allan Walsh was aware of his client’s legal issues in the Czech Republic.

CBC: Pavelec loses right to drive in Manitoba. Title might be a tad misleading as MPI wouldn’t comment on the specifics of Pavelec’s case and it appears somewhat grey as to the letter of the law.

CBA news:

The Hockey News: The CBA war between owners. Even amongst billionaires there are the haves and have-nots. Not a real surprise that there isn’t a totally unified approach to negotiations.

NHL.com: NHL states desire to settle CBA talks by Sept. 15. Wouldn’t that be a nice birthday present for yours truly.

Comcast New England: Roenick – ‘I’m afraid for the NHL’. J.R. is never one afraid to speak his mind and he lets his feelings be known in this video.

NHL news:

Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers make offer to Weber; will Nashville match? Gonna be a nervous 7 days between Tennessee and Pennsylvania. Just when you thought the deals couldn’t get any crazier, the Flyers flex some east coast muscle.

1500 ESPN: Modano mulling a comeback, says he’s feeling Minnesota. When he played what many thought was his last game in 2009-10 and put on a Minnesota North Stars jersey while skating around the Xcel Energy Center, their was an electricity in the air. Would an in-shape Modano be of interest to this younger Wild team?

The Seattle Times: How Seattle arena deal stacks up. Interesting read. The NHL is key (although Hansen has said he would look for someone else to own the team) as outlined in the article as follows;

“King County will contribute $80 million toward construction costs, but only if an NHL team is part of the deal. With no NHL team, the county will contribute only $5 million.”

Friday Papers

Friday, July 20th Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Don’t squander this one, Jets. This will likely be the last summer of wacky (long-term) contracts as expectations are that the new CBA will remove these insanely long contracts.

Winnipeg Sun: What would Jets do if Kane was given an offer sheet? I’m having flashbacks of when the Hawks tendered an offer to Keith Tkachuk (5 year 17.2 million dollar) forcing the Jets 1.0 to pay some big money (at that time) to keep their power forward.

CBA news:

New York Post: Talks focus on players contracts. Perhaps the elimination of long term contracts will ensure guys like Alexei Yashin won’t receive 10-year, $87.5 million contracts, which if you will recall the Islanders were forced to buy out in 2007, but who still carried a $7,159,794 (courtesy of capgeek) until last season.

WEEI.com: The life of a player rep during CBA negotiations. This is going to be one wild summer for the player reps.

NHL news:

St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Blues re-sign Oshie for nearly $21 million. The Blues have remained pretty stable following a successful 2010-11 campaign.

Delaware County-Times: Flyers poised to prey on Weber; now it’s Preds’ move. All eyes are on Nashville. They have 7 days in which to reply to the offer.

Globe and Mail: Preds face painful reality of being a small-market, small-revenue NHL franchise. But wait, the Jets are said to be following the Predators model. That cannot be good for business.

Saturday Papers

Saturday, July 21st Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jet bodychecks case against him. Still cannot believe this is scheduled to go to trial. Big Buff is trying to prevent that by filing a Motion to have the case dismissed.

CBA news:

Globe and Mail: Why NHL teams cry poor despite the league’s record growth. Are the players responsible to help save failing franchises?

Comcast Philadelphia: No update on NHL labor negotiations. Let’s hope no news is good news. Slow and steady wins the race and you couldn’t expect these negotiations to wrap up in a week.

Toronto Sun: Bettman thinking positive. Someone needs to record the number of cliche statements that will be made over the next few weeks as they NHL and NHLPA meet to resolve the CBA problems.

NHL news:

National Post: Maple Leafs taking baby steps with roster renovations. It is actually mind boggling that a team so successful at the gate can be that bad on the ice. The Leafs have not had any real success since they lost in the Conference Finals to the Hurricanes in 2001-02.

Chicago Tribune: Hossa says he satisfied with progress in recovery from concussion. Good news as the NHL can always use a player of Hossa’s skill back on the ice. It would truly be a shame to only see Torres on the ice in 2012-13.

Chicago Sun-Times: Patrick Kane embarrassed by trip to Madison, vows change. Time will tell if he has truly learned his lesson. Easy to say some words and hope that is sufficient. More difficult to prove that you actually intend to live by what you say. If Kane does however, the Hawks could benefit big time.
