Question, since I don't routinely follow the Habs, but why would MTL sign a long-term extension with P.K. before they know what the new CBA looks like? I understand that Subban might want to get a 10-year deal while he still can, but why not wait to see if UFA gets pushed back to 29 before locking in?
Well you could maybe trade him for the rights to Weber (big risk) or perhaps if someone like Mike Green pops loose... But if you are hoping to get a top-pairing d-man locked up for at least a few years under 30... who would do that? I mean a team that already has a young top-pairding d-man locked up is not going to trade them for another young top-pairing d-man that is having 'issues' with his team (assuming PK does have 'issues' and is being shopped).
I think it makes more sense to swap PK for a high end forward (need for need) and try to get either a good prospect or older but still capable #1 in the deal. In this very difficult trade market, that seems to be a lot more likely.
I wouldn't trade Subban for Green. Don't think anybody would, specially since he seems to have re-signed at 6 mil. I was just joking with the under 30 figure eh
Swapping one of our top pairing dman for a forward at this time would just confirm the tank for McKinnon direction. There wouldn't be anybody to fill the skates at all.
The two of them will be the faces of Montreal's franchise. Notice I keep saying, "becoming" or "will be". That's certainly the direction the Habs are going. I'd wager a lot of money on Subban not being moved this year
Only "realistic" guy who is available I'd trade PK for is bobby Ryan but we need PK more even though Ryan is more proven. That being said Anaheim has other needs but just saying, it would take a lot to get him out of mtl so doubt it will happen.
Montreal would be very fortunate to land Ryan off Subban alone, let alone Ryan+.
As much as I'd be very reluctant about the deal I'm suggesting, as the Flyers have lost significant forward depth already this off-season, the following would be what I consider to be reasonable value:
Subban + 3rd for Voracek + Meszaros
with the provision that both clubs get access to sign the RFAs (Subban and Voracek). The Flyers give up more overall but get the best player in the deal.
Montreal would be very fortunate to land Ryan off Subban alone, let alone Ryan+.
Call me biased, but Ryan is the "type" of player we'd need returning in a one for one deal, not spare parts. I would think the two would be the centerpieces but the Habs would have to add.

I think the + would have to be minimal. Ryan is obviously the more proven player but without PK, wow, our D sucks. Bunch of vets, some injury prone and no gamebreaker. maybe Markov can be a #1 again but if he isn't then watch out NHL, we're going to edmonton the next few drafts.
