I'm pretty sure that almost everyone will agree that this was a wrongful act.

My concern relates to the character issue. I would like to hear from Pavelec about his perspective on this, and how he intends to reassure Jets fans that this will be an isolated incident.

Not that anyone supports drinking and driving, but remember where you are and what the main topic of the forum is.
He blew 2.5x what the legal limit in Canada is. I know it happened in the Czech Republic, but just use that multiplier for context of just how drunk he was.

Drunk driving is a reckless decision and it endangers the life of others. I have a personal connection to this cause, as a few years ago a 15-year-old boy who I had played hockey with was mowed down by a drunk driver in my home town.

Why should the fact this is a hockey board excuse people from being able to take real-life issues seriously? I think people have their priorities out-of-whack if the first thing they think about is the hockey ramifications of a drunk-driving arrest. And I think they're seriously out-to-lunch when their first move is to minimize this behaviour by joking about it.

This is the second Jets player to run afoul of the law, we have seen other sports teams that have been negatively affected by players who break the law.

What direction does the team take on these types of incidents and how should they react to players who refuse to follow the law?

Man Ondrej....what a stupidly dumb thing to do

I hope he learns from this. Happy to see he is safe and didn't suffer any serious injuries, not just because he's our goalie, but because drunk driving ain't no joke.

Just to clarify for the Canadian/US audience:

Pavelec crashed the car on May 26. He was sentenced today. He slammed the back on another car at some intersection in Kladno. No injuries, but the damage on both cars ~CZK 100,000 (~$5,000). The blood level was indeed 0.2 (i.e. 2.5 times the US limit - but the Czech Republic has 0.00 tolerance limit for driving).

The sentence is 6 month with 1-year deferral: He will go to jail for 6 months this if he commits another crime within 1 year.

The 20 month driving ban: self-explanatory.

And, most importantly: the driving ban DOES NOT carry over to Canada or the US.

Edit: Since I noticed that some Canadian papers use "Google Translate" (which inexplicably tends to drop some "not" when translating Czech texts), here is the correct quote from the agent, Josef Machala:

"Ondra was not at fault [in that accident]. And, anyway, why should I be even commenting on that?"

A few more details based on the updated "TV Nova" article:

The damage was ~$5,000 on *each* of the cars.
Pavelec was charged with DUI and with not keeping the safe distance between the cars. He slammed a car that stopped because of a stop sign.
The other driver did not even recognize Pavelec.

What message?

That's it's old news?
This happened months ago, thats old news to me.

I dont think there's a message in stating he can't drive?
I guess if there's any message, it's actions have consequences.

He demonstrated poor judgement.
I stand by that statement, Pavs demonstrated poor judgement driving while impaired. People can use inflammatory language if they please. Personally I'll use measured comments.

This is a non story.
Yeah I'll stand by that as well. Pavs committed a crime, and was punished accordingly. By all accounts this shouldn't effect his ability to play for the Jets.

Sorry everyone for that original statement, that really came out poorly. I'm not going to censor general talk about drunk driving, that's just silly.

Please continue, and I know you are all capable of keeping this respectful.

Not to excuse anything but some people use hockey and hockey boards to get away from "real-life". It's not just people here either, see this tweet from a reporter at the free press (name redacted, it should be easy enough to find though).

Oh yeah I'm still very much on board for that.
I find Google translate hilarious and found the part that called him a road pirate very funny. If that corrupts your children be wary of the world, there is far darker satirical humor.

You don't need to provide advice to me about the dangers of this world.

We can agree to disagree. I guess my only assumption is that you haven't been to too many accident scenes where drunk driving results in deaths.

We'll have to agree to disagree, I think making fun of Google translate despite the serious subject matter is Kosher. You disagree, that's life and that's humor.

What is your suggestion (not being a wise a55)? In Buff's case he pleaded not guilty so there is not much an organization can do until the matter is resolved by the courts. In this case with Pavs he was found guilty so my expectations are that TNSE will address it.

What are your thoughts?

Why are the rich people so dum, that they don't take a taxi, when they know they are totally drunk?

Taxi is usually pretty expensive, so some poor people usually try to be smarter and driving drunk. But a hockey player, with all his millions of dollars, and reputation to lose if something happens, take that kind of risks. That's insane.

This is really disappointing. I guess this solidifies the decision to put Bogosian on my jersey.

with two per mille of alcohol you are far away from "totally drunk" but we have 0 tolerance so ofc he shouldn't drive ...
