We would go into 2013-2014 with tons of open roster space, players like Kadri, Gardiner and Frattin allowed another development season in the AHL, Rielly likely ready to compete, and a top - if not the top - prospect in an extremely talented draft.
Again, nobody wants to see a season off (I certainly don't), but can any other team make better lemonade if we're given lemons?
We wouldn't have the most balls, we would have three balls, much like 4/5 other teams most likely. Our chances wouldn't be that great of drafting MacKinnon.

Maybe I misread it, but wouldn't we be the Pittsburgh of this lottery because we've had the least success the past three years without drafting 1st?
Edit: You're right, we would have 3 balls along with 3 other teams.
If we head into the season with the current roster, we'll have a pretty good chance of getting in on the MacKinnon lottery anyway.
Finishing in the bottom 5 while playing the games gives a team greater odds of picking #1 overall than a lottery where all 30 teams all have a chance at #1 with a year long lockout.

Even that description's a little misleading. You don't lose a ball "for every" playoff appearance or first overall. Essentially there's two criteria:
1) Missed the playoffs in each of the previous 3 seasons.
2) Didn't have the 1st overall selection over the last 4 drafts.
If you met both criteria, you got 3 balls.
If you made the playoffs only once OR had the 1st overall only once, you got 2 balls.
If you had two or more of any combination of those two (playoff appearances or 1st overalls), then you only got 1 ball.
From searching, i found the rules. just thought I'd re post them... . Sure we have three balls with 3 other teams, but if 6 teams also have 2 balls and 20 with 1 ball, we would only have a ~6% chance of picking first overall. Those aren't good odds.
What the leafs need from these negotiations is not a lockout. What we need is a bigger gap between the cap ceiling and cap floor.
Especially if we're going to keep our idiot GM who can't capitalize on an up to $20 million ****ing advantage over a god damn substantial amount of the compe-****ing-tition every ****ing year.
It will never happen. The season won't be lost, so forget the dream of the bouncy balls. Even if by some magnificently stupid occurance, the NHL lost the season, they would not necessarily do it the same way. That's the luck of the leafs it seems.

Let's that does happen again what other formart could the NHL use to determine the 2013 Draft order? The 2005 Draft Lottery is the only thing anyone can go by as a reference.
There's the 80 million in operating profit that the suits might miss a bit lol.. no one loses more in that sense.

If there is a lockout, does it count as a season played? Would those contracts even come off the books or just roll over to the next year?
That would be settled as terms of the new CBA, it was an issue in the last round too. In that one they ultimately counted it as a season off the contracts. Likely to be the same but no guarantee.
