Call me crazy and a little biased (I saw Garbutt play in Corpus when I lived there), but I thought he was very impressive. He was tenacious and very fast. He caused chaos & confusion in the offensive zone.
When there was that stretch of Benn playing with Ott & Burish, I was begging Gully to put Garbutt out there with Benn.
Not many highlights of him out there, but this is his first NHL goal. The initial trot & shot impresses me more than the actual goal (even though it was pretty nice too).
The kid has some wheels and a knack for causing issues for the opposing D. I would really like to see what he could do with some quality minutes.

The 1-way is basically a non-issue since his deal is so cheap and we have an owner. He's a good option for the 4th line, but he's going to have to continue to bring it every night to stay in the league. We've seen it before where guys get called up and play over their heads and then get complacent. I noticed a little bit of that creeping into Garbutt's game down the stretch as the team was collapsing, though he did turn it back up at the very end of the season.
He's only been in the league one year, but Gully said he likes to rotate his guys on the 4th line. Then, about mid-season he'll start firming up a more solid 4th line.
I assume that's going to happen again so we could see a revolving door of Fraser/Sceviour, Wandell, Garbutt, Morrow, Nystrom, and possibly Vincour. The entire Bottom 6 could essentially get in on the rotation.
I just wonder if Wandell can work his way into a rotation at center with Fiddler or if he'll mainly rotate in on wing.
Ideally, rather than Eakin playing with a different guy every night, I'd like to see Eakin and Vincour get consistent time together to build some chemistry. Long term, they look like possible fixtures on Dallas' 3rd line. You might as well develop that relationship on the ice ASAP.
That's one thing I love about Eriksson and Benn getting back together. I'd love to see a Modano-Lehtinen/Ribeiro-Morrow relationship bloom. We already know they click off and on the ice. It's probably in Dallas' best interest long-term to just let that grow.
You complain about the most random, small details.
A 2nd season at essentially league minimum is, "silly and unnecessary." Really?
I'm a major Wandell supporter, but he's no where close to being twice as good as Garbutt despite being compensated nearly twice as much. In 2 years of service, Garbutt will only make about $250K more than Wandell will next year.
Not suggesting they should but just wondering how committed Gully will be to rotating guys.
They've committed to paying Wandell nearly $900K again this year so I assume they plan on him doing more than just sitting in the pressbox.
I also imagine he'll play some wing, but we do know they like him at center as well.
Well yeah but Fiddler makes twice what Wandell does and he's a damn solid 4th line center. I think you're reading too much into Gulutzan's desire to rotate bottom six players. Fiddler's not going to go from 14 mins/gm to healthy scratches. Add to that his faceoff abilities and they're probably praying he doesn't get injured.

Yep. He's either playing or he's in the pressbox. I think for an older guy who's making his way into the league that fact should be enough of a deterrent to making him bring it each game. The 2nd year is also a non-issue for the same reason.
